Losing Mr. Darcy - Sara English

    One

The steady drip-drip-drip of water against the glassed in windows was her only companion. There was nothing for her now, in London - or anywhere, really, Elizabeth thought as she lay on the guest bed in her aunt and uncle’s house in London.

She could hear the cries of her cousins downstairs as they played, roughhousing in the

    drawing

    room

    .

Aunt and Uncle Gardiner had taken her in with no question as to her arrival, and no strange looks at the luggage that she brought with her. Mr. Darcy had furnished his pet well with new trunks, and a new wardrobe, all the finest that money

    could

    buy

    .

When she had first arrived, her uncle had looked as if he wanted to ask, but her aunt had shushed him and quickly ushered Elizabeth upstairs. There was a small pan-bath, nothing like the luxury of Darcy House, but Elizabeth had washed in it regardless, trying not to notice as her salt-tears fell to the pan below with hollow th-thunk noises as

    they

    did

    .

As for Mr. Darcy, she didn’t know of his whereabouts. He had not been in Darcy House any of the days before she packed her things and left, and she had not expected him to return while she remained there.

She tried to think back on their last moments together, how his face had closed off to her, how she had broken something inside of him that she was certain could never be fixed again.

She felt like a monster for it. Mr. Darcy had been nothing but kind to her, in most ways that counted, and she, in turn, had disobeyed him and pushed him when he asked her

    not

    to

    .

If he felt wrong for raising a hand and striking her bare skin, then she had surely done the same thing, only worse. She had struck his heart, his secrets, his pride.

For that, she knew, there could be no forgiveness. Once Mr. Darcy’s good opinion was lost, it was lost forever.

The thought echoed in her mind, and she buried herself in the quilts on her bed and sobbed. The tears came for extended periods of time, then dried up while she lay there, a hollow, husk of the girl she had used to be. Under Mr. Darcy’s care, she had flourished, felt greater pride in herself than ever, but now she was alone… alone, and ruined.

Oddly, the thought of being an old spinster and never taking a husband seemed to be less of a dreary idea now that she had so much money to draw upon. And also, how could she ever have any man that was not Mr. Darcy? Such thoughts made her chest ache, and her throat draw closed. It was not to be born. She could not marry, she knew in the deepest places of her soul, unless the one she married was Mr. Darcy. Her heart would not stand

    for

    it
