Trusting Mr. Darcy - Sara English

    One

Is it too late? Lady Catherine De Bourgh asked as she strode into the room, giving neither greeting nor curtsey to either of the other two inhabitants of the chamber. Elizabeth swallowed hard at the sight of the imposing woman, and struggled to get ahold of her warring emotions.

I beg pardon? Mr. Darcy asked, although from the way Lady Catherine glanced between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, Lizzy knew exactly what the old woman was implying.

She wished to crow it at Lady Catherine, that yes it was too late, that they had been joined for days, that Elizabeth knew Mr. Darcy more intimately than any woman could… but Elizabeth held her tongue. Such impertinent language would only hurt Mr. Darcy, and she could not imagine doing anything to hurt him ever again.

Is it too late, Darcy, Lady Catherine snapped, have you gone and gotten the girl… she trailed off and turned her head ever so slightly to regard Elizabeth with a sneer. Have you contributed to her ruination? Have you shamed your family for thinking with so little regard to our reputation and our standing in society?

Elizabeth inhaled sharply, and Mr. Darcy reached out, putting a hand over her wrist to steady her and offer her comfort all at once. The movement told Lady Catherine everything she wished to know, for her shoulders went straight and her eyes

It is true, she whispered to herself, although the sound of her words carried well enough to Elizabeth. What have you done, Darcy? Lady Catherine stared

Mr. Darcy cleared his throat, looked at Elizabeth and gave her such a smile that her heart skipped in her chest for a moment.

I have fallen in love, Aunt, he said, although his words were for Elizabeth, and the softness in his eyes told her that he was only speaking for her ears, and her alone.

Nonsense! Lady Catherine shouted, nearly spitting with anger as she advanced upon them. You would never do such a thing. I could all but imagine your cousin, Fitzwilliam, engaging in such a stupid, torrid little affair, as he cares not a whit for what his family thinks, but not you, Darcy…

Elizabeth crowded into Darcy’s side, and felt his arm go about her shoulder, hugging her tight. She trembled and leaned on him, taking strength from his presence and the fact he was planning on standing up for her. She knew him now, and knew that he would not let

Torrid affair? Mr. Darcy asked, his voice no warmer than the expression on Lady Catherine’s face. His hand tightened on Elizabeth’s and he held her close. It was a good thing too, as she was close to speaking up and stepping forward, to advise Lady Catherine exactly what Lizzy thought of the older woman. This is no torrid affair, Mr. Darcy continued, his voice steady and calm. I would like to present to you, my fiancée, Miss Elizabeth Bennet of Longbourn. Those words, spoken so calmly, had polarizing effects on the two women in the room. Elizabeth sighed, clinging tighter
