    Chapter 1

Elizabeth Bennet eyed the sky, where grey clouds gathered. She had wandered farther afield than usual on her morning walk. The temperature had dipped, and now rain threatened—or perhaps even snow.

The latest letter from her sister Jane in London was snugged into Lizzy’s reticule. Its contents had led Lizzy onto this meandering path. Yet the exercise had done little to clear her mind.

More than two months had passed since the event that had broken Jane’s heart. Charles Bingley had given her reason to expect an offer of marriage. Then, without warning, he had quit Hertfordshire for Mayfair, London’s fashionable district.

Jane had heard nothing from him since. Staying at her uncle’s home in Cheapside, she was not likely to. She and Bingley travelled in different circles. He might as well be on the moon, rather than in the same city, for all the chance she had of seeing him there.

Lizzy sighed as she trudged on. Though Jane protested she would forget him, her letters were full of melancholy. She had the sweetest heart of anyone Lizzy knew. To see her suffering was intolerable.

A gust of wind threatened Lizzy’s bonnet, but it was firmly pinned. Hand on her head, she looked about. Ought she to turn around, or continue on this circuit? She judged it was probably the same distance either way. If she turned back, she would be closer to the main road. So that was what she did.

As she turned, she spotted Netherfield in the distance. Netherfield, which Bingley had let back in September—creating an uproar in the quiet country lives of the Bennet household.

Lizzy could not think poorly of the man. True, he had abandoned Jane. But that, Lizzy suspected, had been the influence of his sisters and good friend Mr. Darcy.

Jane’s lack of fortune had not seemed to matter to Bingley. But to his haughty friend, Jane’s situation was apparently unsuitable. The Miss Bennets of Longbourn were not grand enough for Darcy’s exacting standards.

The Bennets were landed gentry, whilst Bingley’s inheritance had come from trade. Yet Bingley had wealth and a gentleman’s education. That and his association with Darcy made him welcome in the best London drawing rooms.

Darcy was an earl’s nephew and owner of a vast Derbyshire estate. Lizzy had never met a more arrogant man. He was handsome, to be sure. Tall and broad-shouldered. Intelligent and even insightful when his pride did not get in the way. But he was self-satisfied and above all his company.

Lizzy hoped to never have the misfortune of seeing him again.

With her anger and her fur-lined pelisse to keep her warm, Lizzy did not notice the snow. Not until a cold flake landed on her nose. Within a few minutes, it fell thickly and stuck to the ground. She was still two miles from home.

She prayed a carriage might come upon her. Her uncle Philips, for instance. He often travelled this way whilst visiting clients on their farms.

A ride home would be welcome. She was neither cold nor tired, but the snow was falling fast.

By the time an inch accumulated, alarm filled her breast and clouded her thoughts. She knew her way well, but visibility was dropping. If she slipped and sprained her ankle, she might be in real trouble.

The sound of hoofbeats reached her ears. Relief flooded her. She turned to see a horseman.

Now someone knew where she was—could perhaps get word to Longbourn to send the carriage.

The man closed in, and his face came into view. She stopped. She must be imagining things. Yet the nearer he got, the more impossible it was to deny.

    Darcy.

He descended from his black horse. Miss Bennet. Surely you are not out alone in this weather?

Good day to you, Mr. Darcy. She did not hide her annoyance at his condescending words. The morning was clear when I left the house. I stopped at the grocer’s in Meryton, but walked farther than I had planned.

Come, I’ll take you home. If we go at a walk, Athena can tolerate the two of us.

She eyed him suspiciously, wanting to protest. Who was he to give her orders? But she supposed he meant to be kind rather than officious, so she let it pass.

She was no horsewoman in the best of circumstances. Yet, riding was the more prudent choice. Darcy helped her onto the mare, then got back
