PROLOGUE
DARCY
It was a lovely day in Lambton as Fitzwilliam Darcy sat in his office and wrote a letter to his sister, who was visiting their cousins in Scotland. As he wrote, Darcy’s stepson Rowley played at his feet with a small wooden ark and animals. Since the day that Darcy married Theodosia West a year ago, the boy had become his new father’s shadow. As soon as he learned to walk, his every step was spent chasing after Darcy, to the point the gentleman resigned himself to the little boy’s constant presence. Therefore, it was not unusual for Rowley to spend his afternoon in Darcy’s office as he completed his correspondence and dealt with necessary estate business.
What was unusual was the sound of boots crashing against the entryway floor as they ran in the direction of the office.
Mr. Darcy!
James, one of the stablehands, shouted as he rounded the corner into the room. Mr. Darcy, you must come quickly!
Darcy stood with such haste, he knocked over his chair, startling Rowley, who began to cry.
What is the matter, James? Is it one of the horses?
The stablehand shook his head with an air of sadness that made Darcy feel ill down to his very core.
I am sorry, sir, but no harm has come to the animals. It is Mrs. Darcy… she is injured, sir.
Darcy quickly picked up Rowley off the floor and hurried out into the foyer, where his housekeeper Reynolds had already been summoned by the commotion. The little boy collapsed into her arms in tears as Darcy turned back to James.
What has happened, James? Do we need to move her to the house?
he asked as he followed the stablehand out the door. But the expression on James’s face made it clear that something worse had occurred on Theodosia’s daily ride.
Crenshaw went to town to fetch the doctor, sir. But we must get to her right away. I do not believe she can be moved from where she fell,
James said, his face pale with worry. The concern on the stablehand’s face was enough to increase Darcy’s pace so that soon, he left James far behind him. Theodosia was an excellent rider, and she had never once fallen from her
