CHAPTER 1

DAY ONE

It was a beautiful spring day in Lambton and Elizabeth Bennet could not believe the day of her wedding had arrived at last. When Fitzwilliam Darcy asked Elizabeth to be his bride, they hoped to marry as soon as possible. Then, one week after his proposal, Darcy had to attend to family business in Scotland and was gone for an entire month. By the time he finally returned, Elizabeth could hardly wait another moment to be his wife. She chose the first Friday in May to be their wedding day and her entire family, as well as Fitzwilliam’s sister, insisted on being present.

As Elizabeth stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her veil, her nerves began to overwhelm her. She was about to be a wife, to become Mrs. Darcy. She could not be happier, but her heart raced as she thought of the enormity of the life she was about to embark upon. A knock on the door jolted her out of her thoughts, and she turned to see her mother peeping in.

Are you ready, my dear? Mrs. Bennet beamed, her eyes brimming with tears.

Elizabeth nodded and smiled, holding back her own tears.

Then let us go to the church. Your handsome groom is waiting for you, Mrs. Bennet said, holding out her arm for Elizabeth. As they walked out of the small cottage where the Bennets were staying while in Lambton, Elizabeth expected to see a carriage waiting to take them to the chapel. But there was no one there.

Mama? I thought Will sent a coach.
