    CHAPTER 1

Elizabeth Bennet held her hand over her eyes to shield them from the blinding sun. It felt as if her skin was burning in the midday heat and she had nothing to shield her from the searing warmth. No matter where she looked, there did not seem to be anyone in either direction. All she could see were spots dancing in front of her eyes, obscuring much of the abandoned Cairo market in front of her. The emptiness of the streets gave Elizabeth a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach, but she knew she could not be afraid. She must press on.

She needed to find her sister, Jane.

Where are you, Jane? Her voice came out in a whisper.

Elizabeth looked around her, hoping to spot her sister with no success. Then, she caught a glimpse of a face, hidden behind the curtain of a stall. She could not make out the person's features, but it seemed that someone was watching her from a distance.

    Jane?

Elizabeth ran to the stranger, calling out her sister's name. The person did not respond, but Elizabeth was sure it was not her sister. In fact, she thought that perhaps it was a man…

Sir? Elizabeth called out to the stranger.

The face was growing darker and darker, as if a cloud had passed in front of the sun.

Sir, can you hear me? she asked again.

The stranger did not respond. Instead, she began to notice the man's features. The face was familiar, yet hazy, though his eyes were empty and dark. A trail of dried blood ran from his nose across his cheek and to his mouth. Elizabeth could smell the foul odor of decay surrounding him. She tried to recoil, but the shadows did not let her.

    Sir, please--

Lizzy! her sister, Jane, called out to her through the ether.

Elizabeth did not know what was happening. Jane was suddenly looking at her from the shadows with a haunted expression, her face pale and her eyes wide. Elizabeth reached out for her, but she could not seem to touch her sister’s outstretched fingers. It was as if a gulf of darkness was keeping them apart.

The sound of Jane’s voice was still ringing in Elizabeth’s ears as she opened her eyes and cried out into the dark. She may have been safe in her bed, but her heart was in Egypt with Jane…

With her sister, who was missing in the real world, and not only her nightmares.
