CHAPTER 1
Elizabeth Bennet sighed with relief as she stepped out of the coach in front of Blythe Manor. After days of travel, and hours spent stuck in the mud when their axle broke, she finally arrived at the home of her dear friend, Lucy Blythe. The two girls wrote letters to one another for years after meeting at a party when they were young. But now, after nearly a decade apart, Lucy and Elizabeth would finally have the chance to see one another as adults. And she could hardly contain her excitement.
Much to her surprise, Blythe Manor was even more beautiful than Lucy described. Set just on the edge of Kent, the expansive home was surrounded by meadows full of wildflowers and towering trees that provided delightful respite from the afternoon sun. Elizabeth could not help but lazily drift in and out of their shade as she strolled to the front door of the manor house. Her rich chocolate brown hair was full of wild curls and her large brown eyes were filled with curiosity. She also was not much taller than she had been as a child. Lucy was sunshine personified and little had changed over the years.
After exchanging pleasantries, Lucy led Elizabeth inside to freshen up and visit before dinner. As Elizabeth followed Lucy through the mammoth, elegant hallway into a sunny, airy parlor, she could not help but feel like royalty. The room was adorned with ornately carved furniture, sumptuous draperies, and delicate porcelain vases, all of which exuded wealth and luxury.
Is this room not magnificent?
Lucy asked
