Chapter One

Lydia flounced into the parlor with her hair arranged in a very adult style and her face wearing a smug and self-satisfied expression. Mrs. Bennet, seated in her usual chair, fluttered upward. A lace hanky stroked the air and then dabbed below her eyes.

Elizabeth and Jane were also in attendance although their other sisters were not. Neither was their father. He had expressed much disgust at Lydia’s actions and had said, in no uncertain terms, that he should not be present for her visit home except when it was required of him to show his face at the dinner table. And he could not even promise that.

Mrs. Bennet exclaimed, Why Lydia! What a lovely new gown! I am so glad to see that your husband is being both kind and generous to you!

Lydia smoothed the pretty morning gown with an affectionate hand. A gloating expression, in addition to the satisfied one upon her face, created upon her features a less than becoming cast. She preened, Yes, he is. He is such a darling man, and I am so grateful to have captured him so!

Elizabeth could not stand it anymore. How could you, Lydia? Everyone knew from the moment the two of you showed your faces in that place and began jabbering about how you were married that it was a lie. Everyone knew that you were unwed. That you are, truly, too young to wed in the first place.

Lydia shot a hateful glare toward her. Oh please, do hush, sister dear. I do realize that it must be upsetting to you, the fact that I, being younger than you, have quite shown you up by marrying so young and so well.

Elizabeth started to her feet. Her rage was so great that a thin red veil obscured her vision. Shown us up? You have shown us to be horrible people! You’ve shown a notable lack of decorum and good behavior. You quite ran off with a man much older than you...and a man who is known to be both a scoundrel and a...

Mrs. Bennet let out a bird-like cry. Her hanky fluttered in the air again, its lace edges rippling back and forth in her vigorous attempt to somehow use that white cloth as a flag of truce between her two daughters. Her voice was high and thin, edging on hysteria. Elizabeth, dear, do calm yourself! What is done is done and Lydia has made a good match.

Elizabeth snorted. A good match? He is the worst match! You and I and everyone else know exactly what he is. My dearest hope, sister, is that you will find that you have gotten exactly the life that you deserve by your rash actions and your abhorrent lack of care of what light you have shed upon this family’s dignity!

Lydia’s face soured. It was clear from that expression that she
