I t is quite the most delightful thing, Lizzy, is it not? Lydia patted her sister’s shoulder as they took a turn around the lawn at Pemberley.

What’s that, my dear Lydia?

Love. What a wonderful miracle it is!

Elizabeth smiled benevolently at her, as the younger girl stooped to pick a daisy. Indeed it is. Truly wonderful.

I rather think it is the most powerful of all the emotions, Lizzy. I absolutely do.

I would not be at all surprised if you were correct.

Even before her own wedding, Elizabeth had noted the way Lydia had begun to speak of love and marriage so much. She had made it clear that she envied her elder sister’s love match. And almost as soon as she and the Gardiners had arrived at Pemberley to visit the Darcys, Lydia had quickly steered the topic to matrimony.

Elizabeth felt certain Lydia would soon initiate a conversation about a handsome gentleman for whom she had developed a fancy. The subject seemed to be all the younger girl could think of lately.

She was proved right, merely seconds later.

Lizzy… I could not ask you earlier when our aunt and uncle were with us. But I must ask you now we are alone. What do you think of Mr. Wickham?

Lydia’s eyes shone as she spoke of the gentleman in question. It was evident that her feelings for him were highly positive.

Mr. Wickham? Elizabeth thought for a moment. She had learned some damning information about him from Mr. Darcy, but she did not wish to offend or upset her sister. My understanding is that he is perhaps not the best candidate for the position of husband. Is that the kind of opinion you meant?
