About the Author
Foreword
It was the spring of 1980, and although I had been planning for quite some time to spend my junior year of college studying in Italy, the reality suddenly hit my mother like a ton of pizza dough. Her youngest child would be leaving home for almost a year without any knowledge whatsoever of how to cook, clean, grocery shop, or do laundry (but I was pretty smart academically!). Not only would I be leaving home, but I would be living on my own in a foreign country! There were no such things as cell phones or e-mailing. Students generally did not have phone service in their apartments, either. I would be truly on my own in a strange, foreign place. Surely, I was destined to be wearing unclean clothes, living in filth, catching sicknesses, and, worst of all, starving … heaven forbid!
My mom reacted by switching into emergency mode. I was way too busy to hang around at home getting firsthand instructions from my mom, and she accepted that fact. She had to do something, and that something was to sit down and compose a survival guide that stated matters so simply that even the most domestically challenged would be able to follow it.
The reader will notice that this guide was written by my mom in her speaking style, not in a formal style that one would use when writing for the general public. Also, true to the way Italian families tend to hand down recipes, the reader will notice that amounts of certain ingredients are not always precise. Even for know-nothings like me, the act of cooking must maintain itself as an art.
My friends and I used to affectionately and humorously call my mom Santa Lucia. She decided to drop the saintly reference and accordingly titled her book Lucia’s Survival Guide and Cookbook.
It is decades later, and
