Chapter 1
The orange and the yellow shades over the Eastern sky were ready to welcome the Sun to starts its day.
It was the time when almost 60% of the city was in the bed. Yamuna emerged out of the Puja room. She was in her mid-twenties, dressed in a sari and the Sindoor decorated her forehead. A semi-wet towel on her head was trying to dry her wet hair without making any significant effort.
As Yamuna walked out from the Puja room adjacent to the hall, Haritha came looking for her. Haritha was young, but old enough to vote in the elections. She has been the youngest in the family and also the younger sister of Yamuna’s hubby Akil.
Anni… Stop please… I came looking for you...
Yes little pie…How can I help you?
Hope you know that my exam starts today…
Ya….so?
Need your help
I’m waiting to hear
Can you remind the Mantra that you taught me last week?
Yamuna’s eyes rolled and went into a deep thought, Which one?
The one that is used to recollect whatever I have studied so far
Yamuna stared at her, You silly… Just don’t believe in the Mantra blindly… They are just to make you confident…
Ya Anni.. I’m aware of it.. But if you help me recollect that again, I will be even more confident to write my exam today
Hmm… ok
Yamuna quickly chanted the two line Mantra to her. Haritha whispered the Mantra couple of times and was about to leave.
Did you take your shower?
Not yet anni
Please do that before you chant any Mantra
Ok… I will save this in my memory now…
Is Sowmya up?
I tried to wake her up… But she retorted with a kick on my back… She said it is too cold to get up right now….
Now, I want you to take shower right away… I know how to handle her
Yamuna changed her mind of entering into the kitchen and walked to a bed room in the corner of the wide hall. In the center of the bedroom, there was someone lying on the bed fully covered with a thick blanket. Sowmya was a fresh engineering graduate waiting to get married to her fiancée from Columbus, Ohio.
Yamuna stood to the right side corner of the bed and screamed, Sowmya?
The cover of the blanket slowly unwrapped from the top to uncover the face. Sowmya’s eyes opened slightly and as she looked at Yamuna, she quickly woke up from the bed shrugging off the blanket. Sowmya walked slowly towards the wash room attached to the bed room.
Yamuna screamed again, Stop there
Sowmya with a sleepy face and with her eyes half opened turned around to Yamuna and said Yes anni
Yamuna pointed at the blanket that Sowmya shrugged off from her bed and said Will your fiancée from Ohio land in your room straightaway to arrange this blanket?
Sowmya gave her a sarcastic smile, crawled towards the bed and picked the blanket.
Yamuna reached the Hall and her Father-in-law Prakash was seated in the couch. Prakash was in early sixties with his hair completely in grey and had a mush in the same color. He was pretty fresh in the morning, wore a new dark blue shirt and a fresh Dhoti.
As Prakash saw Yamuna walking through the hall, he called her, Yamuna?
Yamuna walked to Prakash with a smile, Good Morning Uncle…
Very Good Morning Yamuna….I got to know that today is an auspicious day. Myself and your aunt will go to the Ganesh Temple with the Wedding Invitation. We will have to start distributing the invitation from today afternoon
Yes uncle, I do remember that
So we are starting now… Where is the driver Raj?
He was here half an hour back uncle
Where is the Invitation pack?
It is in the puja room… Let me bring it
Can you keep it in the car?
Will do uncle
Yamuna entered the puja room, picked the invitation bundle and returned to the hall. On her way out, she came across her mother-in-law Radhika. Unlike Prakash, Radhika was short and slimmer than the average. She was dressed in an authentic South-Indian silk sari and she had a plate that carried the fruits and all the puja materials to be carried.
As Radhika saw Yamuna on her way out, she called her, Yamuna?
Yes Aunty
As we are heading for something important, we want you to give us a send-off. You are a lucky charm for our family. So don’t get yourself busy inside the kitchen
It wasn’t a surprise for Yamuna as it was a custom in her family. She smiled at Radhika and replied, Sure Aunty
Is the Rangoli done?
Haan, yes aunty.. Done early morning
That’s perfect
As they spoke, Prakash and Radhika came out of the entrance and walked down the steps to the portico. There was an Ambassador car waiting for them and the driver Raj standing near the door. Raj was in early fifties and he was a driver for Prakash’s family close to thirty years.
Prakash turned to Raj, Raj… Can you open the trunk?
Yes sir
A few items got loaded in the trunk of the car. As Yamuna was watching, there was a noise,
Good Morning Mahalakshmi
Yamuna turned back hearing the noise and she saw her husband Akil smiling at her. Akil was around 5’11, cleanly shaven and his dark black hair was disturbed and he was sweating. He was in his jersey shirt and shorts. Akil was back from his morning jog.
Yamuna looked at him and said, Mahalakshmi??
Akil came close to her and whispered, The way how my parents treat you makes me call you so….I will not be surprised even if they build a temple for you
and Akil laughed saying so.
Yamuna giggled in response.
In the portico, Raj opened the car door for Prakash and Radhika. As they got seated in the car, Yamuna walked to the entrance and opened the gate. The car started to move slowly towards the gate and while it was about to cross over, Radhika looked at Yamuna and said, We will back soon Yamuna
Ok Aunty… Bye
Yamuna stood near the gate until the car disappeared in the street. Once it was gone, she was about to close the door. Just then a voice stopped her, Excuse me
Yamuna turned to the direction of the voice and she saw a man in his late thirties, dressed in a shirt and trouser. He had short hairs and was around 5’11" tall. He had a file in his hand.
Yamuna gave a confused look as the person was a stranger, Yes?
I need to talk to you for couple of minutes
Regarding?
The man picked up an id card from his shirt pocket and handed it to her, I’m Rahul, an Inspector from Police Department… Here is my id card
What do you want to talk about?
Rahul opened the file in his hand, took a printed image and handed it to Yamuna.
Can you confirm that the one in this picture is you?
The picture had dark brown shades of blood behind and on the front side.
