Ketogenic Diet "Yes & No" Guide For Beginners - Oliver Brown

Chapter 1. Getting To Know the Diet

    What is the diet?

The Ketogenic diet is a strict low carb, high fat, diet that offers many life changing health benefits. It may mean eliminating some of your favorite foods such as bread, pasta, and many sweets. However this carbohydrate reducing diet uses fat in place of the carbs and allows you to retain your consumption of proteins. Its original intent was to counter earlier fasting diets, after seeing much success as fasting had in epilepsy therapy.

The name comes from, Ketosis. Ketosis is the metabolic state your body is put into after reducing your carb intake.  Being in ketosis allows your body to burn fat for energy and is the state in which fat turns into ketones in your liver, supplying your brain with the energy needed to functional optimally.

    Who is it popular with?

Doctors often recommend the diet for children having seizures or diagnosed with epilepsy (often referred to as Lennox-Gastuat Syndrome. Common epileptic symptoms have proven to be suppressed through the ketogenic diet such as infantile spasms; Rett Syndrome(a neurodevelopmental disorder often affecting females); Tuberous Sclerosis complex ( A rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in the brain and may affect other organs such as the kidney, heart, eyes, lungs and parts of the skin); Dravet Syndrome (a rare form of intractable epilepsy that begins in infancy); Doose Syndrome ( common epilepsy syndrome that causes the patient to drop and fall); and GLUT-1 deficiency (a rare genetic metabolic disorder that restricts sufficient amounts of protein required for glucose to enter the brain barrier.)
