Help Lord, I’m Not Perfect Yet - Lonnie Scott

    Yours

    Preface

GOD’S WORD UNDERSTANDS you, and it has forgiveness available for each of us. My intention is to lift up our number one source of comfort, Jesus. He is our reliable helper, and only he can help us overcome our weaknesses. But in addition, God has people he uses to help us along in our lives.

I am not a licensed doctor or counselor, but Jesus is qualified in all of these areas. He knows you and understands what circumstances you are going through. If you desire him and accept him by your faith, he will make himself available to you instantly.

When you repent each time of your own familiar sin, you are gaining strength and wisdom directed at that particular sin. When you start to overcome, you’re coming out of a defeated state of mind. When we do not repent, we are like David who said in Psalm’s 31:10 that my strength faileth and his bones are consumed inside him because of his iniquities. It gnaws at our life and we have no peace.

His word is pure, full of hope and faith. Jesus is our great encourager, and he will pick you up when you need it the most and will not disappoint you. What is so wonderful about mercy and compassion is that it is ours on a daily basis.

This book can be read by all, whether you know the Lord or not. All of us have temptations and trials in this life. We all carry burdens and personal issues with us. Let’s walk together on this amazing journey with Jesus and let him open up some new and powerful truths that will bring blessings to our lives and our families.

The Christian Walk The Journey Begins

I WOULD HAVE to say I was a little skeptical when my new friend asked me to come to church with her. She had asked me a few times to go, but I refused. I had heard some things about the Pentecostal religion, and it was not good. In my thinking, these people were very spiritual, and they rolled around on the floor during church services, and that frightened me. I felt I did not want to become possessed by some evil spirit, but she assured me these were false premises, so I agreed to come. I came that first Sunday morning in the spring of 1986. Everyone was very nice, and it was a warm welcome. The sermon seemed to be directed right at me. I thought for a minute that the pastor knew I was coming because there were things said in the message that no one knew but me. I thought it very strange to hear things about me, so I knew it had to be the Lord putting these words in the pastor’s message. It was the truth, and that is what drew me in.

As the service was closing, Glenda went to the piano to play, and I was sitting there alone in the pew by myself. I noticed the pastor was coming toward me, and she gave me a big smile and asked if I wanted to go up to the altar and pray. I was a little apprehensive at first, but I went up, and we knelt down and prayed. It was there and then that I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior.

I know there are some who say that a woman should not be a pastor of a church. How can you deny that God has saved many people under the leadership of women? Read in the Old Testament about the women God used in authoritative positions that led to great victories and the saving of countless lives such as in the book of Esther. Look at Deborah, a prophetess, in Judges 4. She ruled Israel, and the citizens came to her for judgment on personal matters. Deborah was also put in charge of the military and conquered the enemy that was ruling the Israelites. If women were forbidden to lead, why did God bless Deborah with such a great victory in battle?

We have to remember: the church was just beginning, and they were meeting in very small houses. These early Christians did not have huge buildings to congregate in and have church services. We must also consider the customs and traditions of the early church era. What type of issues did Paul have to deal with concerning these early home churches? I have seen many genuine conversions and blessings under the leadership of women. We need to be careful and look at the whole content of scripture, not just a line, and take it to mean exactly what it says. Dig into it and see that it goes deeper than what you thought.

For example: The Bible says that they shall take up serpents in Mark 16:18. Does this verse literally mean to pick up a cobra? Absolutely not! Paul had to address all members of the family and how they should conduct themselves in church and the home. Let’s not limit God to just one gender to preach the gospel.

Glenda and I, both in our early twenties, got married about three months later. That was thirty years ago; and many, many things have happened since that sunny spring morning. Oh, and to make mention, no one ever rolled around on the floor in the church services for the years I attended. It is a lie designed to keep people from hearing the truth. If they do roll around, it is because they wanted to. The Bible says that we have power over the spirit to either continue or stop what we choose to do (1 Cor. 14:32).

So what has happened since my conversion? First of all, joy. I was full of joy. I found something of great value, and I was excited. I came out of darkness. The emptiness in my life was finally filled and I wanted to share it. I was living with a friend at the time and wanted him to have it also. I was so excited at the time that rejection was something I did not know anything about. I quickly told him about what had just happened and how he could also have it. I got my Bible and encouraged him to get one, which he did. I told several others of my new experience with the Lord. I thought for sure that everyone would accept this, but that was not the case. I learned that not everybody wanted this, and I had to make up my mind really fast that I was going to continue this by myself if I had to.

I would have to say one of the first things I remember after being saved was finding out I was on the road to hell and I did not even know it. I was shocked because I thought I was a decent person. I treated people with respect and fairness, but it never entered my mind that anyone who does not have a real experience with Christ is lost and going to hell. Jesus said that no man can see the Father but by him (John 14:6). God says in his word that there is none righteous, no, not one: (Rom. 3:10). In the beginning of this Christian walk, I did not know a whole lot about this new life. The scales of being in the dark all those years fell off my eyes the moment I accepted Jesus into my heart. This marked the beginning of a new life of light and understanding of God’s word. I
