Chapter One
How It All Began
In writing about a subject like this, we would usually expect the information to come from one of God’s great men or women—however we would size them up for their apparent greatness. But we also know from God’s Word that He sometimes chooses "the foolish things of this world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, and things which are not, to bring to naught things that are: That no flesh should glory in His presence. But of Him are we in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 1:27-31).
And I do glory in the Lord, and often wonder why He would reach down to an obscure farm in Manitoba to talk to a little eleven year old girl who was carrying pails of water up from a creek to water some young calves in the barn.
The pails of water were heavy, so I had set them down and stopped for a bit of a rest about half way up the hill to the barn. It was a mild winter day. The ground and trees were covered with white snow that was glistening in the sunshine and there wasn’t a cloud in the clear blue sky. I was thinking to myself, Is this ever beautiful!
All of a sudden I heard God speak to me. He said, I have something very special for you to do in this life.
I looked down at my poor clothes and my Dad’s old farm and thought, Not likely.
Having learned to play the guitar and sing Country music, and that door opening to me before any spiritual doors, that was the direction I went.
A few believers in God had crossed my path off and on through those earlier years, and some even talked to me about the things of the Lord, but obviously my mind, heart and interests were on something else at the time.
There was one young woman who made more of an impression on me than the others did. She had come to Thunder Bay where my husband and I now lived, to be a missionary. She lived in very cramped quarters, existed on a most meagre diet, and survived on a scant paycheque. Her commitment to God left some kind of an imprint on me. I thought at the time that if I were ever to become a believer, I’d like to be like her.
She knew I played the guitar and sang, so she asked me if I knew any Gospel songs. We looked through my song books and found the song, It Is No Secret What God Can Do.
She asked me if I would play and sing that song at her next meeting. She probably had great hopes of a miracle happening that night in my life, but sad to say, it was the same old me that came out of that meeting as the one that went in..
She didn’t stay very long in Thunder Bay, but I never forgot her. She was an excellent witness for the Lord, now that I look back on it. She wasn’t pushy, not judgmental, a very amiable individual with a happy, bubbly, positive disposition.
After my husband, a Lutheran, and I had our first child, we had him baptized in the LutheranChurch. Shortly after that, my husband’s job required us to move from Thunder Bay down to eastern Ontario for a couple of years. We had some friends there that went to church, but we never became a part of their church-going.
We were invited to country fairs and business dinners which I was often asked to sing at. I was still singing and playing Country music and they seemed to enjoy that. I was asked to sing in a band, which I had done much of in former years, but declined because my baby now came before my music.
We moved back to Thunder Bay when our first child was nearly three years old and our second baby was on the way. We rented a little house for a while before buying our own home. It was through the windows of that little house that I would see people going to Church every Sunday and I began to wonder if our children might really be missing something if we never took them to church. We agreed to attend the same church in which our son had been baptized.
I didn’t understand very much of what the minister was preaching about, but I know now that natural man or woman, without the Spirit of God in him or her cannot understand the things of
