Introduction
Life is exactly how you see it. Period. I’ve read hundreds of books. I’ve taken numerous classes. I’ve studied people and beliefs and energy and pretty much anything I could get my hands on that might help me understand how and why some people seem to have it all, others are a terrible mess, and the rest of us fall somewhere in between. What drives one person to go to night school and another to turn to drugs? Why does one person find his way off of the streets of crime and corruption, while so many others never do? Is there an answer? Is it really based on anything we as humans have control over, or is there a higher power that dictates our lives and futures?
In all honesty, I don’t have those answers. I am not sure if anyone truly does. What I do have is a collection of beliefs, acquired knowledge, and a set of possible theories curated by an inquisitive disposition. It is a collection founded on observation, others’ research, and personal experimentation.
What I am about to share is not necessarily new information, but may contain some information that is new to you. Perhaps it will be presented in a manner that resonates with your current state or will intrigue you to examine your own beliefs a little more closely. Maybe it will lead you to further seek out the answers or means you need to progress forward, or simply verify them through previous research conducted. At its best, it could be that little nudge you’ve been looking for to turn your life into the one you’ve always dreamt about. At its worst, you reinforce information you already know and simply donate the book to your local thrift store, passing on the knowledge.
Regardless, the primary purpose of this book is not to suggest some new, never-been-presented solution to living the life you currently only wish was reality, but rather to provide a potential tool for a more fulfilling life. It won’t require you to complete a set of exercises at the end of each chapter. It won’t suggest you take a six-month sabbatical to find yourself. And, it won’t promise you a simple life if you read every word. However, it may ask you to question some of your current beliefs. It will ask you to look within and reflect upon your current state and how you approach life. All suggestions are optional, and all information is provided for you to take it or leave it.
This is not a book that must be read in chronological order from front to back. While it is designed to flow from chapter to chapter, there may be only one chapter, one paragraph, or even one sentence that you need at this time. Pick and choose that which resonates with you.
This book is not going to provide you with the next get-rich scheme, promise you’ll manifest your soulmate overnight, or guarantee you ultimate bliss from here until eternity. Instead, it is written with the purpose of bringing awareness to the powerful world of energy we reside within. It is presented with the hope that it will positively impact at least one reader to move toward a life of greater fulfillment and joy.
We all have a right to be happy. We all have the power to live out our dreams. Sometimes it just takes some readjusting of our beliefs and perceived reality. If we are open to that, if we are willing to accept responsibility for where we are and where we are going, then anything is possible.
Chapter 1
The Power to Change
The man who really wants to do something finds a way, the other finds an excuse.

While the message is simple, the reality of putting your plan into action is where most people become challenged. Ask any dieter how difficult it is to lose weight. He knows the key to losing weight is to increase activity and decrease calories. Yet, knowing and doing are two very different things. Ask a gambler how challenging it is to walk past a casino. Ask an aspiring actor what it takes to earn a lead role. Ask a writer what it takes to produce a book. The list goes on and on. An idea, the concept, the plan is easy. The action, implementation, and execution are where most people struggle.
Various obstacles may prevent one from moving toward her desires. There may be an emotional link buried within the subconscious. It may be a fear of failure. Every action toward something new comes with a risk. There may be a fear of change or the unknown. We as human beings, as a society, as brain-evolved species, do not typically like change. This is not to say we won’t change or don’t ever seek out things that are different. We all have a level of change that is comfortable. A degree, you might say, that is acceptable for our comfort zone. We may change our hair color, change the model car we drive, change the foods we eat for breakfast, or even change our spouse. Some people actually like change to some extent. They need the stimulation of variety and choices. However, regardless of whether you view yourself as a person who likes or dislikes change, there exists within you a resistance to change, especially that which involves the unknown.
This resistance to change is generally found below the surface of our reality in what is known as our subconscious mind. It’s been said we operate from our conscious mind, or that which we are aware of, approximately 3 to 5 percent of the time. The rest of our actions are controlled by our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is what controls our bodily functions such as breathing, maintaining our heartbeat, healing the paper cut on our finger, and digesting our food. The subconscious mind actually controls the majority of our decisions as well. In reality, the conscious mind is only responsible for a small fraction of what we do.
The subconscious mind is the part of us that functions on autopilot, similar to cruise control in our vehicle. Most of what we do throughout the day we are not consciously aware of unless it is something new, different, or purposely being thought about. However, this is not to say that if something is normally a function of our subconscious mind that we cannot manipulate it with our conscious mind. For example, breathing is a subconscious act. It happens naturally and without any thought when we are both awake and asleep. However, it is also something that we can consciously control. Right now you can become aware of your breathing, which has been happening automatically, subconsciously. You can take a deep breath, inhale for a count of eight, and then exhale for a count of 12. You can manipulate your breathing into several short, fast breaths. There are times when you may already do this on a conscious level, such as when you exercise or meditate.
The problem is the conscious mind only has the capacity to think one thought at a time. Therefore, if you are focusing on your breath counts during meditation, you can’t be simultaneously worrying about your mortgage payment. That is why meditators so often focus on their breath during the initial transcendence into a meditative state. It clears the mind. Again, this is much easier said than done. Ask anyone new to meditating.
So even though we can consciously control our breathing, our conscious mind simply does not have the capacity or discipline to maintain this function throughout the day. As mentioned previously, we only have the capacity to maintain one thought at a time. Throughout the day, our conscious mind wanders and jumps sporadically from one thought to the next. If its only focus was on breathing, we would be unable to carry on with any other daily tasks. You wouldn’t be able to make a decision or learn anything new. Any activity requiring mental awareness would be a challenge. Besides, we automatically lose access to our conscious mind during the state of sleep. Relying on our conscious mind entirely would be fatal.
Therefore, although we have access to our conscious mind throughout the day, it really only controls a minimal amount of our reality. Much of our reality is actually based on the programming of our subconscious mind. This programming is like that of a computer. It does not differentiate between what is good or bad for you. It does not question what it is told to do. It simply runs on what it has been programmed to do. Meanwhile it is always collecting data to add to its existing programs. For example, when you walk into a room, your conscious mind takes in what you are looking for consciously or what draws your attention, whereas the subconscious mind takes in everything. Sights, sounds, smells, textures, sensations, messages, and the energetic disposition are all added to its database. They are neatly categorized and filed with similar acquisitions, all at a level oblivious to your conscious awareness.
Thus, the subconscious mind routinely carries on about its business, adhering to your past programming. If for example you regularly feed it the message that you are broke, it will obediently seek out and remind you of your money problems. Messages such as I can’t afford that
or I never have any money
or There are fees attached to everything these days
play out over and over. Your attention is drawn to the pile of bills that are due. You notice the service fees and high shipping rates associated with your online purchase. You skip the Starbucks latte you love because you are poor and only rich people can drink them on a regular basis. Subconsciously these messages become entwined in your conversations. They may peep through as envy and jealousy when you see others with material objects you can’t afford.
At times these thoughts will move into the conscious realm, and you will be fully aware of the low balance in your bank account and high outstanding debt accumulating on your credit cards. As a result some people will resort to buying lottery tickets or visiting a casino with the hopes of striking it rich. Others may take on a second job or cut back on their spending. But, why do these actions, which would seem to lead to more money (with the exception of gambling), still not improve one’s situation the majority of the time? Why is it
