    The Monster He Had Become

I never thought this day would come. The day where I’m afraid of my own son and the monster he had become. Times weren’t always bad, but the good times were far and few in-between. I did the best I could to raise him right. Now he terrifies me.

Let me start at the beginning, when Bryon was born. That day was the happiest day of my life. His father and I were overjoyed, or so it seemed on his father’s part. When Bryon was two years old, his dad left us.

We moved around a lot. I was trying to find a place that I could afford on the little bit of money I made. All the while, it seemed like none of this affected Bryon. By the time Bryon turned four years old, he had a lot of friends. Bryon remained a happy child. He was very social. Around this time, I met a man who promise us so much. I was eager to believe him.

Bryon’s step-father and I married rather quickly. Now I believe that it was too quick. At six years-old, Bryon started to become withdrawn from his friends. He became less social and outgoing, as time went on.

I figured it had something to do with the constant moving, we were still doing. His step-father’s job had us relocating often. Bryon changed so much. He went from a happy child, to one that preferred to be alone. As the years went on Bryon became extremely anti-social. I couldn’t figure out the reason for the change. I hoped that getting him a pet would help. We bought a house. Therefore, we stopped moving. By this time, we had twin girls. Bryon avoided his sisters every chance he possibly could.

We got Bryon a puppy. He took very good care of him, at first. I should have seen the signs. I didn’t notice that anything was wrong. The dog got cuts on its legs and body. Bryon could not or would not explain how they got there. The dog started to cower every time Bryon walked into the room. One day, the dog disappeared. I asked Bryon about the dog. Bryon said, I guess he ran away. Bryon didn’t seem the slightest bit upset about it. If I paid attention, I would have noticed that this was unusual behavior.

For a teenage boy, Bryon was fairly strong. He liked to do a lot of physical work. He also preferred to work alone. He would get sent home from school quite often for fighting. His excuse was that he was defending himself. Now, I don’t believe that to be true.

Bryon’s avoidance of his sisters ended suddenly one day. One night he asked if he could read them a bedtime story. He spent quite a bit of time in their room after the stories were over. This went on for a few nights. I decided to see what was going on. My husband and I went upstairs to see what Bryon was doing. We looked into the girls’ room. He was sitting there, watching the girls sleep. My husband saw nothing wrong with Bryon sitting there, even though it looked like he didn’t like it much. Bryon sitting there like that made me uncomfortable. My husband went down the hall to our bedroom, he was turning in early. I didn’t like the distant look in Bryon’s eyes. I stood there for a while longer to watch him.

As I stood there watching him, I saw the butcher knife in his hand. His arm was hanging down the side of the chair. I go into the room to ask why he had the knife. To my horror, I noticed the girls weren’t sleeping. They were tied to their beds, awake and frightened. Bryon quickly overpowers me. He puts the knife to my throat and tells me to sit in the chair. He ties me to the chair. He tells me that if I scream, he will cut my throat I believed him. So, I did what he said.

He tells me to call my husband back to the room. Bryon waits for him by the door. My husband comes rushing into the room to see what is wrong. He runs right into the knife that Bryon is holding out in front of him. The girls and I watch, in a shocked state, as Bryon pushes the blade in. He pushes the knife into my husband’s gut all the way to the handle. He pulls the knife upward, towards his step-father’s chest.

My husband tries to ask, Why are you doing this? Bryon pulls the knife out and swiftly cuts his step-father’s throat, after he falls to the floor. I’m
