Then one morning shortly after sending the letter, Emogene woke up to a fire. The store and their home above it were burning. She tried to get to her parents, but the fire was too hot, and she lost them both along with her livelihood.
So she accepted William’s offer to be his bride. However, Henretta’s brother Jonathan presented himself as a suitor as well, and he had been in love with Emogene for a long time. Chapter 1
Dyer County, Tennessee 1881
Emogene awoke to the smell of smoke. She was having such a nice dream, recollecting the time she spent with her best friend, Henretta, while visiting her in Kansas. Henretta had just gotten married to Travis, a really nice cowboy and homesteader she met as a mail order bride.
Emogene shook her head. She wasn't sure she could have married a man she had never met before. Then she realized she was twenty and she had never even been courted.
The smoke was getting thicker. Where was it coming from?
Emogene wondered.
Emogene jumped out of her bed and ran to her bedroom door. She and her parents lived over the grocery store they operated in Tennessee. She opened the door and saw flames!
She gasped. What about her parents? She ran to get dressed, throwing on her every day shop dress over her night gown. She put on her shoes and then ran to the window.
Emogene opened the window and climbed onto the ladder built onto the side of the store. Her Papa had built the ladder so he could climb to the roof easily. Their store was two stories, the downstairs for the store and the upstairs for the home.
Where were her parents? Emogene wondered. She started calling to them, Ma! Pa!
The house is on fire,
she shouted.
She climbed safely to the ground and looked around. As she stood back from the grocery, she realized the entire store was in flames!
Ma! Pa!
she shouted. Where were they?
she wondered frantically.
People came running out of their houses when they heard her shouting. Men began forming a bucket brigade, but as they started to douse the fire, they realized it was too late. The store was engulfed in flames and there was no way to save it.
Emogene began crying, My parents! They are still in the rooms upstairs.
Mrs. Lambert moved to comfort Emogene. There, there, dear. Shhhh, don't cry. It will be all right by and by.
Emogene continued to cry on Mrs. Lambert's shoulder. Mrs. Lambert started moving Emogene slowly towards her home. Shhh,
she said. Come lay down at my house.
Mrs. Lambert looked over her head at the face of the sheriff, her husband. Her parents,
she mouthed. The sheriff shook his head in sorrow.
Looking back, Emogene wasn't sure how she made it through the last few days. She lost everything, her parents, their livelihood, her future. Her friend Jonathan and his family were there beside them all the way. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert were so kind, but she couldn't stay there forever. Whatever would she do?
Emogene picked up the copy of the Dyersburg Gazette and began to read the personal ads.
MAIL ORDER BRIDE WANTED FOR SALOON KEEPER. MUST BE PRETTY AND A GOOD COOK. Reply to Kansas City Star, Kansas City, Kansas.
Emogene looked in shock at the paper. Was this Travis' friend, William? She remembered his golden hair, somewhat like hers, and how they laughed together when she was visiting Henretta and Travis.
Emogene took up her pen and began to write a reply:
My name is Emogene Bowen and I'm from Dyer County, Tennessee. I was a shopkeeper, but my parents and the grocery store recently were burned in a horrible fire.
