    Chapter 1

    Nashville, Tennessee, 1872

MAIL ORDER BRIDE WANTED: Traveling man wants mail order bride. Must be able to live alone.

Amanda smiled as she read the newspaper advertisement for the mail order bride. What a luxury it would be to live alone! Amanda was the oldest of ten girls, living with her Ma and Pa in Tennessee in a tar paper shack on the edge of the Cumberland River. The river town of Nashville was quite tiny; people made a living with subsistence farming, growing a little corn, a little cotton for cash, and tobacco and potatoes. Along with a good sized garden, most people could get by if they were a good shot with a rifle. Amanda was a very good shot.

Amanda was also very pretty, with long dark hair and dark eyes to match. She would have said she wasn't pretty because Amanda was also had a very rounded figure. Amanda equated round with fat and would have added ugly to the equation in her description. She had beautiful dimples and a bright smile that lit up her face and made her eyes twinkle. But, alas, Amanda was fat, and therefore, in her eyes, ugly.

Amanda Thompson thought about the newspaper advertisement all day long as she weeded the garden, gathered the vegetables, and prepared supper for the rest of the family. Her Ma and Pa both worked in the fields, and each of the daughters had individual responsibilities around the little farm.

Amanda was responsible for supper, Caroline her next sister in line, was responsible for lunch and laundry, Victoria, the next in line, was responsible for breakfast and the little ones, getting them off to school and watching the four under 6 years old. Then there was Mary, Margaret, and Molly, all out of elementary school and working with Ma and Pa in the fields. The four little ones were Annie, Alice, and Emma, and baby Minnie, all being watched at home.

Amanda went to the back acreage and looked for something to shoot for supper. She preferred to fish, but her day got away from her since she had to pull weeds after the big rain over the weekend. She looked and saw a wild turkey grazing at the edge of the field. Perfect! If she could take out two, they would have a fine supper of wild turkey and dressing, greens, beans, potatoes and tomatoes with cornbread. She aimed carefully and blam! Down went turkey number 1. She carefully watched for Tom Turkey's brother, Trick. Trick, as she called him, would be more wary than his brother and little trickier to shoot. There he was! Blam! Down went Trick. Now to prepare supper.

A family of twelve required quite a large meal, especially since so many of the family worked in the fields every day. Hard work meant big appetites so Amanda knew to cook plenty of food. She started by gutting and cleaning the turkeys, then plucking, then placing them in the wood stove for roasting.
