About this ebook

The year is 1880 and orphaned Modena decides to become a Mail Order Bride.

Modena Montgomery was placed at Woodcroft Manor at the age of fourteen and at twenty-one she was ready to leave the manor and become a bride. Her destination was Helena Montana where she was to become the bride of Jefferson Stephens Cole. Cole was a bit older than many of the men seeking a bride yet there was something about him that made him Lovisa’s choice for Modena.

Her train ride enabled her to meet a young couple Seth and Maggie Morgan. Just a normal newlywed couple who were on their way to visit Seth’s sister who was expecting a baby. Little did she know that Seth was hired to kill Jefferson by his own attorney and best friend, Arthur Washburn. It seems Arthur was making a small fortune drawing up wills for various clients over the years and cashing in on their estates. When Jefferson asked to have his will changed making Modena his sole heir Arthur decided he had to make sure that marriage should never take place and hired Seth. A change of heart and Maggie’s pleading not to mention he had become fond of Modena made Seth to back out of his job and forces Arthur to take matters into his own hands. On the day of Jefferson’s wedding Arthur confronts him and somebody gets killed.

    Chapter One

    Louisville 1880

Modena Thompson Montgomery came to the Manor as a young girl of fourteen after the passing of her parents with the fever. Breton Thompson her mother’s brother and only living relative, but unable in his position to care for her made arrangements for her to be placed at the Manor. He had heard of Lovisa Goldington and her girls from the Manor. He was assured that Modena would get a full education in all subjects including, art and music. Modena was also guaranteed a place in society and a good husband when she turned twenty - one as did all the girls of the Manor. As so this lovely child with hair the color of a raven’s wing and eyes that were gray, with blue but actually gray and stunning when she looked at you. She was a delightful student and excelled in all her subjects, but it was music she really shined at. Not only could she play the piano and often did, but singing was her greatest gift. As the years went by Modena changed from a sweet young girl to a beautiful young lady and now with her twenty-first birthday just days away it will soon be time to leave this wonderful place she has known as home for the past seven almost eight years. As with all the others before her it was that at their twenty-first birthday the girls were ready to leave the Manor and to a new home and marriage. The men were fine men who sought wives to share their lives many from out west. Daily Lovisa’s desk was filled with stacks of letters from prospected husbands for her girls and it was Lovisa’s duty to find the right man for her girl which ever one it was. Since she began the Manor, she has placed fifteen young ladies with husbands and they are happy. Now she had to find a husband for Modena. There was a soft knock on the door and Lovisa looked up.

    Come in.

Slowly the door opened and Evelyn Chamberlain, her assistant, walked in.

Miss Lovisa, the cook, was wondering for the party tomorrow would you want it on the patio or later after supper in the dining room?

Lovisa looked up from her desk.

I think outside in the afternoon and tell the girls they can wear their own gowns. Let’s make it a real party, weather permitting of course.

    Of course. Thank you, ma’am.

She turns and makes her way out of the office. Lovisa goes back to her stack of letters on the desk trying to pick the right man for Modena.

It was later that day when Miss Chamberlain once again tapped on the door of Lovisa’s office.

Once again the soft voice of Lovisa said to come in. This time, Miss Chamberlain was carrying a tray: it was Lovisa’s lunch. Since lunch time had ended two hours ago, she thought she would bring Lovisa’s to her.

I thought you might like to take a break and have something to eat.

Why thank you dear. Just set it over on the table there. I get to it in a moment.

    She looks at Lovisa.

I’m not leaving until you at least eat something.

Lovisa gets up and walks over to the table and picks up a slice of bread.

Have a look at those letters on the desk, maybe a new set of eyes will help. It’s getting so that I feel like I’m reading the same letter over and over again.

Evelyn moves over to the desk and looks at the stack of letters. She looks through the first three then stops when she comes to the one with the photograph of Jefferson. She looks at him and smiles.

This Jefferson Cole seems like an interesting gentleman. True he’s not a young man. His letter states he is forty but young at heart. He doesn’t look old and he does seem to be sincere about have a wife. Have you read his letter Miss Lovisa?
