    Chapter One: Introduction

    Having Our Say by Sarah L. Delany and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth was first published in 1993. The book is subtitled The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years.

    In the year of its publication, the book was New York Times bestselling book of oral history.

    The writer sisters were the daughters of a former slave. Their father was the first African American elected Bishop in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America.

    The Delany sisters were civil rights pioneers. No one knew about their stories until Amy Hill Hearth, a reporter from The New York Times, interviewed them and wrote a feature story in 1991. Through that story many people came to know about the sisters and their work.

    Later on, Amy Hill Hearth expanded her feature story into book form. The book was first published by Kodansha America in New York in September 1993.

    The book was an instant success and it remained on the New York Times bestseller lists for 105 weeks.

    Up to this day, the book has sold more than five million copies. In the year 1995 it inspired a Broadway play.

    Similarly, it was adapted into a CBS television film in the year 1999.

    Many high schools in the United States and in several other countries have added the book to the curriculum. It is also taught in the classes of African American and Women’s studies in colleges around the world.

    The book has been translated into six different languages. Most of the critics and reviewers highly admired the book.
