CHAPTER 1

Although Rodney was driving at a pace that felt as if it were faster than the speed of light, time seemed to slow itself down and nearly come to a complete stop for Valerie Thompson as she sat in the back of the van and reflected on the events of the past few days that changed her life forever. She knew she would have to leave behind all that she knew – her job, her friends, her cat, and what little other possessions she had – and start a new life with Todd. She knew that she could cope because she had been used to letting go her entire life.

She wasn’t so sure that Todd would have as much ease with coping with the loss of his former life though. Todd had a lot more to lose than Valerie did, but she was sure that their love and their bond would give them both enough strength to get through this hardship. She never once doubted her love for Todd, and despite everything she did not regret meeting him either. Although she did not know what the future held for her and Todd and knew that it would be a difficult journey, she still had hope.

It was just after midnight, and Valerie, Todd, and Rodney were leaving in a van after escaping from the mental institution to go to the same haunted house where all of this had begun. It seemed like it was so long ago, even though it had only been a couple of days since that night, the same night that Todd and Valerie’s lives were changed forever. When a lot happens in one’s life at once, it can often seem like just the other day was a lifetime ago, she thought.

Although none of the young escapees wanted to admit it or show any sign of it, they were all frightened, they were all on edge, and they knew they all were too. There was an unspoken and unwritten agreement amongst the trio that the three of them would not mention that fact. They knew that after escaping the asylum there would be no chance to turn back. They had to take action, they had to stop the ghost that was terrorizing them, and they had to do it on their own terms and their own way because they knew that the world was against them on this. It was their battle and their battle only to
