J.M. Cagle began writing stories while in high school. She went on to attend California State University, Dominguez Hills and continued her pursuing her writing interests by interning at KTLA, a Los Angeles television station. She also became a sports writer for two community newspapers. She would attend sporting events and write articles on the games. Ms. Cagle also worked part-time at internationally acclaimed The Studios at Paramount where she garnered first-hand knowledge of the intricacies of television and film production. She has since gone on to write a multitude of screenplays and theatrical productions.Ms. Cagle’s focus is now centered on the writing genres of romance, paranormal and suspense novels. She also enjoys writing in the spiritual genre as well. When she isn’t engaged in her favorite pastime of writing she takes pleasure in singing, visiting the beach, bicycling, reading, walking and spending time with her loved ones. Peter Merlin sat on the stool next to a long, wide wood table in his workshop. He picked up a clean cloth and began to smooth the surface of the chair leg he had carved. He gently ran the oil cloth over the Oakwood until every grain shone to perfection. He loved his work as a carpenter. Designing and molding a piece of natural wood into a functional yet beautiful piece of furniture was an art. Peter could not imagine being anything else in his life. His father had taught him the rudiments of the craft. He taught him about shapes and angles, how to carve and mold a piece of wood to get his desired results. But he also encouraged creativity and originality. He wanted Peter to be an artist, not just a carpenter. When his father died drowning thirteen years ago he hadn’t thought he could go on without his guidance and tutelage. But Peter felt his father’s spirit in every piece that he sculptured. He knew his father was still with him. Peter was very good at what he did, and he enjoyed it immensely. He was a very humble man and wasn’t comfortable receiving praise for his skill. But that did not mean that Peter didn’t recognize his talent. He knew that he was extremely good at carpentry. So when his family and friends heaped tons of accolades upon him, he accepted the admiration with humility and grace. Many thought that he was just superior at what he did. But he knew it was a gift from God. It was a gift just like his other capability, a talent that he was not all together glad that he possessed. Unlike his mother and sister, who seemed to accept and embrace their special prowess unreservedly, he struggled with it. Maybe that was because he saw it as an obstacle to achieving his goal. His family had quickly acclimated to the fact that they would always have to hide their powers from others. Although there was much progression in the fields of electronics, medicine and agriculture in 1893 Vermont, witchcraft was not an accepted way of life. Persecution and death were the penalties for such practice. There was no leniency in this punishment. So if he were to tell the love of his life that he was a witch, his life and that of his family might change forever. Was it a risk he was willing to take? There were times when Peter hated being who he was. He had lain in his bed many a nights and bemoaned his fate. His mother always said that it was a privilege to be a witch. Everyone was
