    The title of the novel Vanity Fair comes from The Pilgrim’s Progress written by John Bunyan which was first published in 1678. It was being widely read while Thackeray was writing his novel.

    In The Pilgrim’s Progress ‘Vanity Fair’ refers to a stop along the journey of the pilgrim. It happens to be a perpetual fair that is held in a town called Vanity. It represents the mankind’s attachment to worldly things in a sinful manner.

    Vanity Fair is regarded as a classic in the present. It has been adapted into several movies.

    In the year 2003, the book was listed on The Big Read as the UK’s best loved novel, conducted by the BBC.
