It is assumed that the novel Sons and Lovers had its source in Lawrence’s life. He used to live in a mining town of Eastwood during his childhood. It was made into Bestwood in the story.

The character of Walter Morel was based on Lawrence’s father, Arthur, who was a very hard drinking and irresponsible man.
