About this ebook

Lower back pain and dysfunction are often caused by postural abnormalities. Back Pain and Posture-A Balancing Act will help the reader understand the significance of posture and its relationship to lower back pain. It specifically explains the effects of a short leg and pelvic tilt. It gives the reader action steps that they must take to help cure their lower back pain. This is the second book in a series of lower back pain self-help books. Each book builds on the action steps of the previous books. The first book in the series, Feet First, must be read and the action steps in that book need to be completed first before the sufferer advances to the steps outlined in this book. Although lower back pain can be caused by many conditions, nearly all lower back pain sufferers can be helped substantially by identifying and correcting any structural and functional weaknesses and abnormalities that can be contributing to or associated with these other afflictions. Back Pain and Posture-A Balancing Act will guide you along your journey to a better and more pain free lower back.

    Introduction

I bet growing up there were times you felt like you knew what it was like being in basic training for the armed forces. You most likely received the same orders from your parents as I did. They sounded very much like drill sergeants. Just in case you forgot, it probably sounded something like this: Hold your head up. Pull those shoulders back. Stick your chest out and hold your stomach in.

They did so out of concern. They knew poor posture was unattractive and wanted us to present the best appearance possible. They knew that in society appearance matters. What they probably did not understand was that poor posture can have negative health consequences. Nor did they understand that poor posture can be the result of the affects of daily habits and lifestyle. They thought it was all due to a lack of effort or perhaps just a sort of laziness. They did not understand that it just might be the result of our day to day habits and lifestyle, not to mention psychological stress that children may be experiencing as well.

Their intentions were very well meaning; but their understanding of the problem was certainly somewhat lacking.

They were right…posture is important from an aesthetic perspective. We just don't appear too attractive when our posture isn't great.

When we look at someone with poor posture, our first impression is usually a negative one. We often think of that person as introverted, shy, depressed, having low self-esteem, lacking in confidence, generally appearing rather dejected, and physically unfit.

On the contrary, one that stands tall and erect, exhibiting excellent
