Introduction
My love-hate relationship with both myself and my addiction to food culminated in hospitalization in January 1992 for cellulitis of the leg. My doctor was called into the emergency room, and almost dropped the chart when he noticed my swollen leg with its purplish-blue tint. He proceeded to methodically measure both calves, noting that the left one was something like twenty-two inches in circumference while the right leg was about nineteen inches. I’ll never forget the words he said to me in the following moments: Jeff, either do something about your problem with your weight, or be prepared to lose your legs with the next couple of years. If you lose your legs, you’ll become even more inactive. If your body does not get some form of exercise, the next thing you’ll lose is your life
He turned to make preparations for my hospitalization, leaving me to my thoughts. Over the next three days, I cried more than I ever have in my life, with possible exception of my mother’s untimely death. I did a lot of soul-searching during this time, finally realizing that I was out of control with not only food but many other aspects of my life. I knew I was both desperate and beaten. I gave it all to God. He showed me the way to the answers, and now I’d like to present them to you.
The hardest thing about writing a book that will ultimately be filed under the category of self-help in bookstores is to attempt to sift through the layers of the past to separate fact from fiction. In the intervening years between my childhood and emotional
