PREFACE
I never expected to be writing this book, for a few reasons. Firstly, I never expected to struggle with an eating disorder. I mean, when I was picturing what I wanted to be when I grew up, addicted to food dysfunction was nowhere in the cards. Secondly, even after my journey through food addiction into freedom, I never really saw this as my topic
to talk about or teach on. My testimony of deliverance would come up here and there as I traveled and spoke but when asked to minister somewhere it was nowhere near the top of the list for things I wanted to talk about. I was more interested in social justice issues and mobilizing national initiatives. So, why take the time to write this book then?
I suppose it began one day when I was uploading short video clips for our website on various topics. I decided to upload an old one I had taped early on in my Christian walk. It was my personal testimony of overcoming bulimia through God’s supernatural power. The little video has been up on my site for over a year now and I have been surprised at the number of women and even men who have stumbled across it, watched it and have emailed me to reach out for help because they are struggling with the same thing. Time and time again different individuals have written and asked for prayer, for advice, and implicitly, for hope. Every time one of these e-mails came I was nudged with the reminder of how powerful our testimonies are (Revelation 12:11). I was also reminded of the desperate place I was once in and the supernatural grace of God that pulled me through, one step at a time. Recently, after receiving another e-mail, I felt compelled to put my story down in book form to share it in more detail and specifically to share more about the main keys that broke me into freedom. My hope is that this book will encourage, give hope and perhaps a few tools for anyone who is in the battle. It is a winnable battle, I promise.
In no way do I consider myself a professional counsellor and I would not profess to be an expert on the psychology of eating disorders. I am simply a real girl with a real story, who knows the real God and has a heart to help others who are in the fight. I know what it is like to be there. Thankfully, by the supernatural grace of God, I also know what it is like to be free. If you struggle with an eating disorder, I want to encourage you that the principles and God who set me free is the same one that can do it for you. If you don’t yet know Him, I pray you will find Him through these pages.
He loves you so much. He cares for you and He longs for you to be free even more than you do - that is how amazing He is. Not only is He amazing, but He is able. If you plug into His supernatural grace as your source for freedom, I truly believe it will make all the difference and that soon you will see yourself not only longing for freedom, but walking in
