About this ebook

Jason doesn't buy into Los Angeles hype and vanity. He is actually really content living the everyday average lifestyle, even though he wouldn't consider himself "average." His days are spent eating cheap food, acquiring street smart skills, and chilling with his legit Mentor, Ivan. Ivan befriends Jason at Cafe Banahana, and is intrigued by his unglamorous passion and unconventional ways of thinking.

Jason finds out that Ivan is arrogant, grumpy, and very old-fashioned in his thinking. But he finds the time to mingle with him over a cup of coffee and pastries in the evenings at Cafe Banahana. Jason talks about his business ideas, the woman he is trying to “woo”, and the other fun topics grown old men talk a about next to their old school Chevys.

In The Mentor, Nabil Gulamani’s intriguing, unique, and charismatic characters teach the world that everyone has desperate, big goals in life. But without the interdependent relationships with the surrounding environment of “very rad” individuals, nothing can be accomplished in the planet.

Jason walked inside a small coffee shop called Café Banahana. He looked at the menu for a long time but had a difficult time deciding what to order.

You are new to this city aren’t you?

Yes. I landed a few days ago from New York. I am attending the local community college here.

I want you to come to my café every day in the evening for two hours.

    Why?

Because I will teach you lessons that your college will never teach you. I will pay for all your meals. Without my assistance you won’t be able to deal with your daily challenges in Los Angeles.

My parents told me I should be very careful who I become friends with in this city.

I am the closest friend you will ever make in this town young man.

Jason got scared, so he ignored the old man and started walking out the main entrance. But something inside him told him that this man is worth listening to. Jason had just landed to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago. He started walking back towards the old man slowly. He was willing to listen to what the old man had to say. He knew that if he didn’t learn to talk to strangers he wouldn’t make any new friends.

I knew you would start walking back towards me .Take a seat, I will make you a sandwich.

Jason felt a little more relaxed.

How was your day at school?

Not that great! I had a difficult time getting along with the students in my classroom.

    Do you have a job?

    I am looking for one.

You can help me sell sandwiches in my café in the evenings. I don’t have enough to pay you but you will have a great time working here I promise. You can start tomorrow after school at four in the afternoon. Just dress up casual, nothing fancy. Feel free to bring your homework. But you probably won’t have time to do your school work in here because you will have to listen to my fat ass talk to you the whole time.

Ivan was a fifty five year old man. He was half Mexican and half American origin. He had a full grown beard and he had a large belly. He had lost a lot of money in the past. He was single; his wife had left him a while back to go live with another man. She wasn’t happy with the decisions he was making in his life. He started Café Banahana to pay off all his debts. He was a very arrogant man, but people respected him for his discipline and focus.

Jason was twenty two years old. The café would stare at him and try to get his attention. His family emigrated from Italy to New York when he was four years old. He moved to Los Angeles because he wanted to be independent and find his passion. His confidence attracted everyone sitting in the cafe. Ivan knew that the young man had potential to succeed in Los Angeles. He spoke to Jason for about ten minutes and he could sense that he was passionate about life and learning.

It was Jason’s first day of work at Café Banahana. It was six in the evening and he was exhausted because he had gotten up really early for school that day. He threw his backpack in the back office and put his uniform on.

I need some help; I have two customers that want a chicken sandwich. The meat items are on the right hand side close to the toaster oven. The salt & pepper bottles are next to the hot sauce.

After an hour the café wasn’t very busy. Jason thought that it would be a good idea to get some of his homework done.

I have a lot of homework. Do you mind if I use the table by the window to get some of my school work done?

"Sure go for it. I am going to put the bread in the oven and then come join you. I have some left over Tuna so I will make some sandwiches for us so we can eat together. Sorry for being a little hard on you today. I have to make sure my customers are happy; I don’t want them to go to my competitors a few blocks away. In this country most people are average at what they. Many are good. A few are great. I want the customer service experience in this cafe to be great. Where are you living?"

I found a cheap studio about a couple of blocks from here.

    How much are you paying?

    Eight fifty per month.

Good deal! Save most of the money you make here. Don’t overspend!

Jason got distracted. Oh wow look at that woman right there. She is really gorgeous. He kept staring at her for a few minutes. She was browsing the pastry section.

Go talk to her Jason; let’s see if you have any game.

ME? GAME??!! I am broke man; I don’t have a loaded bank account to attract that woman right there.

You don’t understand women do you? All you need is a little confidence that is it. That woman wants a real man who can approach her and say whatever he feels like saying without worrying about the outcome. Go ring her up and make sure you come back here with her number.

He started walking towards her. She gave him a flirtatious smile. He was nervous. She had a great looking body. She was a brunette with light brown eyes.

Your total is four twenty five for the bagel and cookie.

She grabbed a few dollar bills from her purse and handed them to him.

    Here you go.

He was nervous and dropped a couple of coins on the floor while giving back her change. His heart was racing fast. He wanted to start a conversation with her but he was afraid to mess up so he just kept his mouth shut. She smiled at him and looked directly at his eyes, but he looked away. She grabbed the food, zipped her purse and started walking out the door.
