About this ebook

Danny and Lizzie have passed their individual tests, and now it’s time for their pair test. Helped by their guides, Tom and Barney, who’ve also died following crashes, they set out to stop two teenage boys from doing a dare to race against a tram, with one of them sticking to the front of it with suckers and the other racing it, to become part of a gang. With persuasion and practice of their new transportation skills, they make the teens see for themselves what they are doing is wrong. But just as Danny and Lizzie think they are winning their test, a new enemy of a huge thing with dark and dirty wings appears to be trying to get the teens to carry on with their challenge and ignore the angels. Thankfully, Danny and Lizzie win the challenge, and back at the School they are shown how they have helped the boys to get on with their lives. And Jerry, the school founder, tells them that he thinks the invisible force was probably an old friend of his who has died, but turned bad and into a bad angel, called a ‘Black Angel’. Now Danny and Lizzie have to train harder, and will have to be on alert more.

I wonder what our next test will be like, I said to Danny as we stood by the screen on the back wall of the Team Room.

Jerry did say after my individual test that as we’ve passed our own, next it’ll be as a pair.

So, there’ll be more than one young adult to deal with.

I don’t know, Danny said. Maybe he meant that we’d do the test together.

Could be, I agreed. But what will it entail? Railways for me and racing for you? Can it be done?

As I spoke, the classroom began to fade: the cupboards and chairs bleached into whiteness and the grey walls turned blue.

I think we’re about to find out, he said.

Then we heard a voice saying, I wonder what we have to do when we get there, Gavin.

Don’t know, Brendan. They did say it would be risky, though.

We found ourselves looking down at two cars: a blue Ford and a green Vauxhall. In each was a boy of about our own age.

I studied their clothes. The boy in the blue car wore a black leather jacket, actual leather not fake, and he wore matching leather driving gloves. The boy in the green car following wore a suede-type jacket with brown trousers. Not such a poseur as the first boy.

What do you think they’re going to do?

Danny shrugged. Don’t know, but it doesn’t look good.

Then the boy who had first spoken said, What do you think we will have to use? Trains? Cars? Buses?

If it’s risky, then I’d say trains and cars, as they’re both fast. I hope your brother doesn’t mind you borrowing his car to do this.

    I shivered, as though
