The Emerald Quest - Julie Day

If you wish to be one of the first who knows when I get a new book out, or when one is coming out in print, then why not sign up to my newsletter at http://eepurl.com/b3zDYv. You will get a free short story, which is the prequel to the first book in my next series called The Rainbow School.

Aliona flipped out of bed, humming 'Happy Birthday'. She opened the curtains. The sea was sparkling blue, matching her mood. A fish swimming by waved a fin. 'Happy birthday, Aliona!' it mouthed.

Dare she look to see if she had changed, like her best friend, Delta, had?  Taking a deep breath, she approached her mirror. She closed her eyes, then opened them again. Her hair was still shining, dark and wavy as usual, and her tail was also glossy. Her eyes were there usual sparkly blue. She glanced at her hands. Ooh! she gasped. She joined her mum in the kitchen, where she was preparing the breakfasts for her family.

    Aliona sang, Good morning, Mum.

Good morning, darling, her mum, Barbara, replied. Happy birthday, sweetheart.

    Aliona looked round the room.

You'll get your present in a minute, when you've had breakfast. Her mum put a bowl of sea crisps in front of her, then went into the next room. Returning with a small velvet box, she handed it  to Aliona. Happy birthday, sweetie,’ she said. ‘Here's your special present. There is a message inside for you to read.

Aliona had heard about these messages. She unwrapped the paper, then opened the box. Oh, it's empty, she said.

That's the idea, Barbara said. You have to read the message first, then you will understand.

Aliona opened the paper. She read:

"The emerald you have to find,

will lead you to the merboy you seek,

but don't take too long, mind,

    for
