Prologue
She cradled the crying newborn in her arms wishing that she’d shut her mouth. The cries were like stings to her very ears.
At just eighteen years old, she’d dropped out of college and worked a full-time minimum wage job. To make matters worse, she’d been dumped by her boyfriend of just a few months which meant that she’d be caring for their baby alone.
She glared at the crying baby in her arms. If it weren’t for her, none of this would be happening.
Once she discovered that she was pregnant, he was the first person she’d called. Although they had only been dating for a few months, she knew that he was the man that she’d spend the rest of her life with. With a little one of their own on the way, they could finally elope and start living their lives together. She reached for her cell phone and quickly dialed his number with a smile on her lips. She was just dying to share her good news with him.
Hello,
his tired voice said on the other end.
She loved hearing the sound of his voice. Hey, I’ve got some great news to share with you!
He stifled a yawn. At 6 o’clock in the morning?
Yes!
He yawned. I’m listening.
I’m pregnant.
Excuse me?
I said I’m pregnant.
There was silence on the other end.
Hello?
I’m here.
His tone was rather cold, but she didn’t seem to notice.
She sighed, letting out a gasp of air that she’d been holding in. For a moment, I thought that you’d hung up on me.
So why are you calling me?
he asked while using the same tone.
Her face formed a deep frown. What did he mean by that? She was calling to tell him that she was pregnant. To tell you that I’m pregnant with our baby.
How do you know it’s mine?
Because I haven’t been with anyone else.
Listen, I’m not ready for this,
he admitted.
Her heart dropped. What do you mean you’re not ready for this?
I’m not ready to be a dad.
She began to panic as her world crumbled down around her. You have no choice!
she snapped. I’m pregnant whether you like it or not. This baby is coming, and I know you’re scared but we can get through this together.
Baby, who is that?
she heard a woman ask in the background.
Who is that?!
she demanded.
He ignored her question. Listen, you’re a smart girl. You’ll figure this out, but I can’t be a part of this.
She gasped not knowing what to say. Then, she heard a click on the other end. Hello?
He’d hung up on her.
She set her phone on the nightstand beside her bed. She couldn’t believe that he’d just hung up on her like that. And who was that girl in the background? Had he been cheating on her the entire time?
She could feel her chest tighten while the tears spilled over. She glanced over at her roommate’s side of the tiny dorm and was thankful that she wasn’t there. She’d hate for someone to see her this way.
She nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard a loud bang. She opened her drapes and watched the downpour of rain that threatened to flood the street.
A hatred for her unborn child began to bloom in her heart. If it weren’t for the baby, he’d still be with her. He’d still want and love her. She’d keep him so busy in the bedroom that he’d be too tired and satisfied to even think of another woman.
Honey, are you okay?
she heard her mother say to her now, as she stared into her eyes. She’d been so busy with her thoughts that she hadn’t even noticed that she’d entered the room.
She blinked a few times. What?
A concerned look covered her mother’s face. I asked you if you were okay. Are you?
She frowned at the newborn that was in her arms and then handed her over to her mother. I’m fine now,
she responded, as if a heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
Her mother smiled at the baby in her arms and rocked her gently.
Her daughter frowned while watching the lovely scene. She’d rocked the baby earlier, but she screamed her head off as if she’d hated it.
So have you decided on a name?
her mother said, her eyes never leaving the beautiful baby in her arms.
Yes,
she said with her arms crossed, I’ve named her already.
So what’s her name?
Chapter 1
Seina Santiago sighed to herself as she entered the crowded apartment. The twenty-four-year-old had promised her mother that she’d bring her younger sister home safely and that was exactly what she was going to do. Her eyes roamed the tiny apartment for any sign of Ashlynn while standing in the living room but there was no sign of her. The smell of alcohol and cigarettes filled her nostrils, and she winced at the cigarette smell.
Hey, how are you?
Ashlynn’s friend, Marcella said, as she cocked her head to the side and blew out a cloud of smoke. You look like you’re about to choke.
Seina fanned the area in front of her face with her hand. I will if I don’t get out of here.
Marcella chuckled lightly. Looking for Ashlynn?
She nodded.
