About this ebook

When Gabriel manages to find a vampire, he discovers that not all of the legends are true. Unlike the creatures of myth, Ruth (and others like her) must drink the blood of other vampires to survive rather than sustaining the vampires human blood acts as a drug, destroying an addicted vampire’s self-control, their personality and ultimately even their basic survival instincts.

Gabriel asks Ruth to turn him and Ruth is happy to do so for reasons of her own; her previous apprentice, Michael, has become addicted to human blood and following the death of his human girlfriend the true extent of his addiction is revealed. Ruth realises that she must turn Gabriel so that she does not starve. At the same time, she must decide what to do with Michael, who has degenerated into a dangerously inhuman creature.

    Fever in the Blood

Gabriel was watching her again. She didn’t have to see him to know that he was there. Ruth had enough experience to know knew exactly how he felt. It was as if he reached out to her without realising; he had a distinctive touch, gentle but firm. Almost erotically charged - deliciously indecent with so many other people there - when she was in the right mood for it. It reminded her of the way his hands felt as they brushed over her skin.

This was a game they played together sometimes; stalking each other, taking it in turns to be first predator and then prey, hunter and then hunted, switching from one to the other in the time it took to catch each other’s scent.

Ruth brushed her long, black hair back from her face and knotted it tightly at the nape of her neck. Her eyes flicked almost imperceptibly around the bar, searching for Gabriel’s sharply handsome face. In the harshly electric overhead glow which flooded the room, everyone looked the same.

    There…

She had him and he knew it; or, at least, she was almost certain that he knew. One moment Ruth was being hunted, and the next…

Their eyes met - just for a moment, but a moment was enough. Yes, Ruth thought. She had him this time.

He hadn’t taken a seat or bought a drink - good; that meant he hadn’t been there for long. He didn’t intend to stay for long, either. Ruth watched as he pretended to scan the bar as if searching for some lost friend or date. His gaze slipped around her, mocking her with that momentary lack of acknowledgement, and then he turned for the door.

When he left the bar she was following him, easing her arms into her jacket sleeves as she walked - it would be cold outside after the pressed heat of the bar and since Ruth was cold blooded it bothered her more than most, but she couldn’t afford to waste a moment. If she did, she would definitely lose him.

A small crowd of people were standing just inside the door,
