About this ebook

The Person of the Holy Spirit is THE GIFT promised in the book of Joel. THE GIFT is also why Jesus commanded the apostles to tarry in Jerusalem, until they received Him, The Holy Spirit. His infilling changed their lives from hiding in fear to boldly proclaiming the gospel and a willingness to give up their lives, and He is still given to ALL.

Seek Him... He is THE GIFT.

He matures the believer and purges the dross from our lives.Without His fire in and on our lives, we are powerless to live for Him. But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The Holy Spirit has impacted my life, and I thank Him for showing me the things of Jesus. He is not found through the use of formulas or traditions of men, but only by a personal relationship. Jesus said He could do nothing without His Father, so for us to experience that relationship in our lives, He said we would need the Holy Spirit. Without Him we can do nothing, for He is the revealer of the heart of the Father.

I would like to thank David Eells for speaking into my heart the urgency and encouragement to complete this work. To Dr. Lynn Aurich, a very close friend from days when neither of us knew Jesus, were lost, and headed toward destruction. Had it not been for Lynn, the handwritten lesson notes on the original teaching regarding the baptism in the Holy Spirit titled Power from on High, would never have been a pamphlet, and, now, this book.

Writing this book has been extremely hard for me because I do not want to let Father down. Over the past five years of this endeavor, I have written, rewritten, deleted, added, and so forth. Not until Father brought me to Dave Malone did I get peace writing this. Through his patience and guidance, this book has been honed. The Word says that iron sharpens iron and deep calls unto deep. I cannot say it better than that regarding the friendship and leadership he has provided me.

I also would like to thank Michael Duncan for the tremendous vision the Holy Spirit gave him regarding the incredible artwork.

This book would not have been possible without my wife Priscilla. I am indebted to her for her patience throughout this experience and standing by me when I was frustrated. She lovingly corrected some of the anecdotes in this book, and I could not have done this without her. The Word says, He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord (NASB). I am living proof of that scripture.

    FOREWORD

Rex and I have been close friends for almost forty years. He and I met in Lafayette, Louisiana, where we spent time together as officers in the local chapter of Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International (referred to as Full Gospel in those glorious days.)

In 1978 the chapter elected me as president, and I asked Rex to serve on the board. During the ensuing years, our spiritual relationship flourished and has continued to do so, and we sharpen each other’s iron constantly. Full Gospel was a mighty tool in the hands of our Lord during the Charismatic Movement, and there was a specific thrust regarding the experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit. In our meetings which numbered on average about 500 souls (from all denominations and walks of life), many folks, including local pastors, were coming to find out about the Holy Spirit. God was moving sovereignly powerful and in manifestations that would no doubt astound most Christians today! We would arrange and preside over the meetings, but it was needful to mainly try not to get in His way, an understanding that I believe today’s church needs badly.

As one studies church history, it becomes very clear how God began restoring all the early church truths that were lost during the dark ages. It began with Martin Luther in the 1500s, and we can actually see these restoration foundations in Hebrews 6:1-2 and how God step by step has restored these truths and in the same progression as the Bible lists them! (This is a great study in itself.) In God’s divine design, these have all been progressive stepping stones in the foundation He has been building for His Church in order for it to grow into the image of Christ. The Holy Spirit by necessity has always been with the church in this process. Each restoration has lasted for whatever period of time it took for God to firmly implant His particular truth and purpose. Of course, being born–again was always an emphasis, but a major thrust of the past Charismatic Movement (1965-1985) was to emphasize the baptism in the Holy Spirit…though the Pentecostal movement in the first decade of 1900 (the Azuza Street outpouring) was the actual initial restorational move for the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Rex and I were indeed fortunate to have experienced the re-emphasis of baptism in the Holy Spirit in the Charismatic Movement, along with experiencing the gifts of the Holy Spirit and an unparalleled wave of Bible teaching!

As one can see in history, each of the sovereign outpourings portion of each restoration lasts until God is satisfied, then men continue on to operate and typically tend to organize what God did. Nonetheless, in each restoration the accomplished purpose(s) are burned deeply into millions of His people, and the God-established truth(s) have thereby remained steadfast from the past and are continuing to be so as God moves on in this day. Unfortunately, over time, the normal process of men erodes for many the purity through alterations resulting in a mixture. Rex’s book on the gift of the Holy Spirit offers the clear-cut clarity that people need to help them in their understanding as they sincerely seek for the truth.

You have need to read the whole book and re-read and study it out for yourself. In an important chapter, Rex zeroes in on the distinction between the Holy Spirit being with you and being in you. I believe you will come to understand there is a substantial difference. Without a doubt, there is no substitute with God for your personal study of His Word. Teachings and book writings in themselves cannot give you revelation impartation. Teachings and writings are (or at least should be) from revelation received from the Holy Spirit. Hearing teaching and reading writings are needful and fulfill part of the making up of His body—but revelation from the Holy Spirit of these things must be between each individual and God. It is every pastor, teacher, and minister’s great desire that people would study things out for themselves.

Serving for many years as a pastor has caused me to understand that each person, including the one teaching, must consistently ask, seek, and knock along with study. God will honor it with the good things of His treasures. The Bible tells us these are hidden treasures, and God working in concert with the Holy Spirit decides how and when to reveal and release these in the power of His saving grace for each individual’s heart. These can be termed as His fiery workings as the thoughts and intents of our hearts are exposed before a Holy God working His divine purpose in us. This is an ongoing process in our walk and is the divine design of God to destroy the old man and bring countless personal experiences of His resurrection life.

In closing, I reiterate that one must have each restored stepping stone of God’s designed foundation in order to go on with that great unfolding of what lies ahead for His people. Don’t miss out on the one for which Rex has written this book.

    INTRODUCTION

Why Another Book on the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God’s agent of change in the life of a believer.¹

As you study, you will note that the disciples were full of fear after the death and burial of Jesus. Depressed, they resorted back to fishing. Not until Jesus commanded them to wait for the promise of the Father regarding the Holy Spirit and their subsequent infilling, did they receive power to become witnesses. This changed their lives—and the world. It is to this end this book is written—that you too may experience the infilling of the Holy Spirit and for those of you who already have, to understand more fully this power and gift of the Holy Spirit.

Writing this book has been a very humbling undertaking which has caused me to pray in earnest for understanding in both my soul and in my spirit. During periods of writing, rewriting, reading, and rereading, I prayed the Holy Spirit would anoint the writings on these pages to stir the reader to press in to Jesus and learn how much He loves us. The hour approaches, and now is the time for those who desire a deeper relationship to be matured to believe the promise: And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death (Rev. 12:11 King James Version). Overcoming will take submission to the Holy Spirit because it is His charge from Jesus to teach us.

Anyone teaching a doctrine that the baptism in (infilling) the Holy Spirit is nonessential and irrelevant is not teaching truth. Jesus spoke often of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist’s ministry basically ended with prophecy regarding Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Jesus started His ministry with the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Jordan River, and He left this earth proclaiming the disciples should wait on Him that the Father would send: For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power (1 Cor. 4:20). And in the Book of Acts: But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8).

The Word teaches us the significance of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, and the apostles were admonished to wait on Him before they launched out. Today, unfortunately, most churches bypass the ministry of the Holy Spirit to the body and focus on speaking in tongues and their opinions about that experience. While speaking in tongues is important, this book’s focus is on the importance of receiving the person of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is an integral part of a Christian’s life, and Jesus wanted His disciples to be filled with the Spirit. He commanded they wait for Him who was promised: And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49). The promise Jesus spoke of was the Holy Spirit, and Peter clarified this in the Book of Acts that the He was the gift. Inherent in the Holy Spirit, alive and well today, are nine gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12 and nine fruits mentioned in Galatians 5:22. We will need the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits, if we as Christians intend to carry out the ministry of the gospel. A time will come when we will need one of the nine gifts to operate in our lives and in the lives of loved ones. Remember as you study the Word, people came to Jesus for what they saw, and what they saw was the operation of the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ life.

The majority of churches teach one is filled with the Holy Spirit at the new birth experience. While this does happen, as this book discusses, it is not a formula. For some of us we must be taught and be diligent in seeking. True of all believers is that the Holy Spirit grows us into the likeness of
