THE PARABLES OF JESUS

Matthew chapter 13 is unique in the gospels as it contains seven separate parables of Jesus. Anyone wanting a quick introduction to Jesus’ parables could look no further. In previous issues, we have already considered the parable of the sower. We’ll cover the wheat and tares parable next month. That leaves us with five parables for this article: the parables of the mustard seed, leaven (yeast), hidden treasure, pearl of great price, and net.

Parables long and short

So far in our series, we’ve studied some rather long parables, elaborate stories like the good Samaritan and the dishonest manager. However, our five parables this month are very short. The hidden treasure parable, for example, is only one verse long. As such,
