Finally a decent morning after three days of steady rain and unseasonable winds. Ruth pushed her sunglasses up her slender nose, smoothed down her gardening trousers and took a hearty breath of sweet summer air, pulling the front door closed behind her.

Anyone looking at Ruth as she strode towards her allotment just before 10am might admire the tall, strong shoulders of a woman in decent shape for 60. They might notice the way she held her head high and proud, her shoulder-length hair glossy, with just a wisp of grey.

But Ruth herself was conscious of not having exercised for too long, busy as teachers were, tying up those end-of-school-year loose ends.

WAS HE A SECRET AGENT, A JUNGLE EXPLORER…?

Never mind, all was well with the world now. The summer holidays had begun, and she’d time to attend to her allotment. That would give her muscles a good old workout!
