Everyone on Madison Island thought they knew the Walker family, but no one knew them like Elise. Spoiled kids, asshole father, angelic mother; they were practically family after three years of being their nanny.

Elise stood on the edge of the Walker’s pool with her hands on her hips. Howie and Isa Walker ran back and forth in front of her, water dripping from their swimsuits. A dark trail of wet footsteps led between the hot tub and the pool.

No running, kids, Elise told them. They jumped into the pool, Howie a step behind his older sister. Little splashes marked where they hit the water. Elise stood on the edge of the pool, waiting for them to bob to the surface. She had long since given up on worrying about how long they stayed under water. They did it just to tease her.

She looked out across the grounds while she counted off the seconds in her head. A burbling waterfall splashed water into the pool by the diving board at the far end. Old oak trees stood sentinel (along with a giant wrought iron fence) around the rear of the mansion’s grounds and kept most of the cameras away. The fact that the house was on a gated island didn’t hurt, either. Closer at hand, a pair of masseuses stood by their massage tables and chatted with each other in Spanish.

Howie popped up first; his little fists rubbed the water from his eyes.

Almost 30 seconds, Howie, Elise said. That might be a new record.

He looked up at her. Really?

Elise nodded. Isa emerged beside him. She sputtered briefly, then gave her brother a shove. I beat you again, toad. Howie collapsed sideways with a splash.

Be nice to your brother, Isa. That child has too much in common with her father. Elise dipped each of her feet in the water; the pool deck was already getting too hot. I wish I brought my sandals.

Howie surfaced again and dog paddled toward the steps opposite his sister. Isa just swam to the edge and waited on Elise to lift her clear. Once the kids were out of the pool, they ran back across to the hot tub. Elise shook her head.
