The crowd of Greeks that thronged the marketplace shot Laleh and Nasrin dark glares, sending a shiver of worry down Laleh's spine. I thought you said Cyprus was subjugated, Laleh said.

It is. Nasrin glanced around the marketplace, her perfect figure a beacon for the crowd's lust, then said to the olive seller, Two boxes. Quickly, please.

That the Greek men would look on Nasrin with lust wasn't surprising; it was their anger that worried Laleh. There were far too many for their two guards to handle.

The olive seller laughed. You do not need to hurry, my ladies. My people mean you no harm. We love your Darius. He rolled a handful of green olives into a fragrant wooden case and set the whole thing on the counter of his cart.

Laleh selected an olive and bit into it, just to be sure it was a good one. No sense in showing the ruffians any fear. The proprietor grinned. It meets your approval, lady?

There was no denying the flavor. Cyprus had olives unlike any she'd ever tasted, even in Persepolis. Salty with a current of sweetness that teased her tongue. Xerxes would love them even more than she did. Delicious.

Nasrin glanced at the men around them. She'd risen to become the leader of the courtesans, though Laleh still couldn't get her to admit her actual age. While she was looking at the crowd and Laleh was selecting another olive, the olive seller made a series of gestures to the crowd. He didn't notice that Laleh was watching as he did it. Moments later, the crowd began to disperse. Their guards didn't relax a fraction.

Nasrin turned back to the olive seller. A year ago your people were literally dying to keep us away. Now you love us so soon?

He continued filling the second box, talking as he worked. No Greek loves being under the thumb of another man, but with Darius as emperor, we are left largely to rule ourselves as we see fit so long as we pay our taxes and maintain order. It turns out it is better than Athenian rule.

Nasrin pushed the first box toward Laleh and hefted the second. Is that so?

The proprietor nodded, his expression eager. Just so, my lady. My brothers on the other islands should follow suit. I wish we had known sooner of your style of rule. Better to be a servant to an emperor than a slave to a tyrant.

Laleh tensed at the word slave. Her position in Darius'--and by extension Xerxes'--harem was still technically as a slave, even if she had caught the prince's eye.
