Kace peeked through the crack in the wagon window. Do you think they have her?

Winn pressed herself to the opposite end of the carriage seat, her eyes fixed on the wall. I feel terrible for tricking her.

Their mouse-hybrid driver gave her a pat on the leg. Don’t. It was her duty, her house. She is going where she was destined to be. Like you are going where you are meant to learn. He stood then, opened the carriage door and hopped out. Now, I’ll get this wheel fixed and we’ll be on our way.

But Winn’s stomach was in a knot, twisting and churning where it had been exhilarated. Before Master Hiba had given she and Kace their secret assignment, to help the driver trick Yale into running off into the forest, sacrificing herself to the unevolved, well her life had been on track. She was finally on her way to Advanced Drone Prep School to learn how to physically implement everything she’d been reading and taking tests on for years. Of course, she’d seen some videos of births, but now, now she would actually witness labor and assist in deliveries! This was what she’d waited her whole life for.

Still, where did that leave Yale? She’d been just as eager for Advanced classes as she and Kace. Then Master Hiba said she was to be sacrificed. But to what? What was out there? Winn shivered as the carriage shifted about, jarring her.

That about does it! The driver announced. Moments later they were travelling again, leaving Yale to her terrible fate.
