    Erica sipped her coffee and looked around the student union. Groups of couples sat everywhere, holding hands or staring into one another’s eyes. It made her sick. Well, it made her mildly angry and more than a little depressed. Another Valentine’s Day, another disappointing, lonely evening.

    She picked up her book and tried to lose herself in the story, but the sound of a couple behind her noisily smooching was too much of a distraction. She stuffed the book into her backpack and hoisted the coffee so she could make the lonely trek across campus back to her apartment.

    Alone. Again.

    As she trudged across the building she saw James, the nerdy boy from Chemistry, sitting in the corner reading a book by himself.

    She stopped and watched him. He was slouched in the chair with one leg carelessly draped over the arm. He had tangled brown hair and a slim frame that wasn’t athletic, but was far from fat. His un-ironic glasses were crooked on his face and he looked to be completely absorbed in whatever he was reading. The ache of loneliness made her stomach feel hollow. Should I ask him out for a drink? What can he do? Say no? She took a deep breath and strode toward him.
