    Jolene

The morning after the night before, Jolene pulled herself up from the bench. On unsteady legs, she dragged her aching body to the dank underground bathroom. She knew instinctively that Seth’s essence had attached to her, and that she and Wesley would be together forever. One glimpse in the rusted old mirror was all the proof she needed. She saw nothing there.

Well, not nothing. She could see her face in the mirror. Her skin remained stark ivory as always, but her cheeks had gone sallow since all this trouble began. In the low light of that one struggling bulb, her lips burned crimson. Her hair was a mess of untamed auburn curls, rising like flames at the back.

But none of that was too out of the ordinary. The eyes were a dead giveaway that something had changed—yes, they were emerald green as ever, but the sparkle was gone. Her glare was dull and clouded by a supernatural presence.

When she looked in the mirror, her soul was nowhere to be seen. That was the big clue. That’s how she knew Seth had awoken the succubus.

Jolene swung the door open to greet Anoush and Rebecca. Hey girls! Come on in!

While Rebecca passed Jolene a platter of homemade mini-cupcakes, Anoush stood slack-jawed in the doorway. Staring at Jolene’s outfit, she perched a bottle of red wine against her hip. Oh honey, she said, shaking her head like a mother disappointed with her child’s report card. "Honey, no, no, no. You are not wearing that dress. The guy hasn’t seen you yet, has he?"

Wesley? Jolene nodded in thanks to Rebecca and placed the platter with the rest of the finger foods on her dining table. No, he’s not here yet. What’s wrong with my dress? I bought it special.

Setting her gift of wine on the table, Anoush ushered Jolene past the other guests and into the bedroom. She closed the door. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene… Anoush set a hand against her black hair and shook her head side to side. "Jolene, honey, you can not wear pink. I’ve told you this before. You don’t listen. Why do you ask me for fashion advice and then not listen? And when did you buy this dress? Where did you buy it? Who did you buy it with?"

Jolene looked at herself in the bedroom mirror. She thought she looked pretty darn great. The dress was kind of a throwback to the eighties: strapless, satin, and hot pink with white polka dots. It had kind of a Minnie Mouse skirt to it, full of crinolines that jutted out in a circle, but only covered her legs to mid-thigh. She’d even bought an adorable pair of pink patent leather flats to go with it.

Sorry, Jolene said. Anoush liked to pick out all her clothes, since she obviously couldn’t be trusted to dress herself. I got it in the underground one day when I was coming back from lunch. It was in a shop window and the price was right, so I figured what the heck?

"What the heck? Anoush swung open Jolene’s closet doors. More like what were you thinking?"

Was it worth standing up to strong-willed Anoush? Probably not. Anyway, she was right. There was too much red in Jolene’s hair and too much green in her eyes to pull off a pink dress.

Well, then, what should I wear? Jolene asked. It’s my birthday. I want to look special.

Wire hangers screeched across the metal tension rod as Anoush flipped past dress after dress. When she came to the green one in the dry cleaning bag, she stepped away from the closet in awe. Is this yours?

Whose else would it be? Jolene chuckled. "It’s in my closet."

Plucking the hanger from the rod, Anoush tore off the thin plastic bag and held the gown in her arms like a child. It’s gorgeous! Where did you get it?

When Anoush set the vintage gown on the bed, Jolene sat beside it and ran her fingernails along the fine beadwork. You won’t believe this, but I found it at a thrift store when I was a teenager. I paid fifty dollars for it, which was a lot for me back then, but I knew a dress like this was worth it.

Worth it? Anoush traced her finger over the designer label. Honey, this gown has got to be worth ten thousand dollars by now.

Jolene smiled. It had been a long while since she’d taken a good look at the dress finely stitched with shimmering beads and golden threads. "Well, I didn’t buy it as an investment—not in a monetary sense, at least.
