    Jimmy sat on his rock and looked out over the herd. The llamas grazed on the far side of the meadow, down by the pond. He didn’t worry too much about them. The adults were much too big to fit through the fence and the crias tended to stay in the middle of the herd. He lifted his field glasses, just to be sure. The dozen or so little llamas played in their open space in the middle of the herd, right where they belonged.

    Closer to his rock, the alpacas milled about. He swept his glasses across them. They were smaller and thicker than the llamas. A line of females squatted together, stretching out from the dung pile. Jimmy shook his head. Alpacas were the strangest creatures he’d ever minded. What kind of animal shit in even rows? If it weren’t for the alpacas, he probably wouldn’t be spending the next two days up here, so he was willing to let that slide. One of the alpacas was due to have a baby in the next few days, and it was his job to make sure no wolves or coyotes tried to interfere.

    Jimmy set the glasses on his lap and leaned back against the rock. He tilted his hat forward and let his eyes close. Getting up at four in the morning to ride all the way across the ranch left a man tired. Wolves and coyotes weren’t going to hassle the animals before noon, anyway. God’s creatures had more sense than get up so early. He dozed in the morning sun.

    When he woke, the sun had only moved a hand’s span across the sky. About an hour nap. Not bad. Jimmy stretched and groaned. He levered himself to his feet and shook off some
