The lions have changed their call tune.The males are no longer calling for the females to hunt; the females have made a kill.

Our three-man team was on the last day of a 12-day anti-poaching patrol and our bodies and minds were weary. We were already hallucinating about the next night’s hot home-cooked meal that would await us at base camp upon our return.

The sun was low when we decided to pitch camp for the night and open our last tin of beans and sugar corn. We were busy discussing the best way to braai a decent steak that would satisfy our protein craving when Madala looked up in the direction from which the lions had been calling for the past two hours.
