    1. Messy

I breathed in deep, letting the fresh air fill my lungs and try to calm the pounding in my chest. My whole body felt like it was floating while I tried to wrap my brain around what had happened.

I looked back down at my phone and read the message again:

Hi Dalton, I know it’s been a long time. But I’m in Lakeview, I need to see you. Please. – Andre

My heart nearly exploded when I read it again. Andre was here in Lakeview. My boyfriend of almost four years who had unceremoniously dumped me right after graduation was here. I was a mess. There were all sorts of feelings churning through me. This was all so out of the blue.

    Dalton, what are you doing?

Arthur’s voice hit me like a bucket of water to the face. I snapped out of my emotional fugue and realised where I was and what was happening. I was standing outside Arthur’s house while my parents were inside having, oblivious to my sudden emotional turmoil.

Sorry, I muttered, turning to look at him. His presence was comforting, even if I did feel like an idiot. It’s just that I didn't know what I wanted. Before now I thought I was over Andre, but...

Is there something wrong? Are you having doubts about our arrangement? Arthur’s brows furrowed in concern, and something about that lifted me. He was worried, perhaps Arthur cared more about me than he than he let on.

    It’s my ex.

Even saying the words was like a weight off my chest. Andre wasn’t exactly a secret, but I had never mentioned him to Arthur. It’s not something I liked to talk about.

He’s in town. He just texted me, and I got a little overwhelmed, I continued, the words pouring out. Now Arthur was going to think I was such a wreck.

I understand, Arthur replied, frowning. He placed a hand on my shoulder. If you want to go home I can tell your parents some excuse. Are you going to be okay?

All I could do was shrug. Okay was relative, but I could pull myself together, maybe. Then, without warning, Arthur hugged me, his thick, strong arms wrapped around me tight. I breathed in his heady scent, cologne, cooking and manliness. Arthur’s embrace was like an extra-sensory blanket that calmed me.

I returned his affection, our hug lingering a little too
