How does Matt Buchman turn a book about a Delta Operator, a Cowboy, dogs, and military-quality tests into a book that’s perfect for curling up with on a rainy evening? Big Sky should be all sharp corners and harsh planes, zipping bullets, and dead villains—all the components are here. But no. Now that Lauren Foster has retired from Delta Force, she’s determined to embrace civilian life in New York City. But Colonel Michael Gibson, her boss in Delta, and his wife scoop Lauren up and take her off to a Montana Ranch which is nothing like New York City. The Henderson Ranch has horses, cowboys, tourists, a chuck wagon, war dogs, a handful of ex-military types including the legendary Emily Beale, a tactical room in the barn, and helicopters. Lauren thinks she can handle everything but the dogs, since her Malinois war dog, Jupiter, was killed on her last mission. What Lauren doesn’t expect is to fall in love with a cowboy. And not just any cowboy, a former NYC film student/wanna-be director turned cowboy. No one was more surprised than Patrick Gallagher when a visit to the Henderson Ranch to see his brother, turned into a job. Now, four years later, Patrick can’t imagine living anywhere else. While Lauren struggles with PTSD and fainting when she first sees the Malinois, Rip, (fainting! Her! ), Patrick grapples with knowing who he is, a film major who tends to view the events in his life as classic movie scenes. He’s a man enthralled by a woman who has been the action hero in her own life. What could she possibly see in him?And here’s where the book becomes a romantic feast—pour the hot chocolate, plate the warm cookies, tug on your flannel jammies and softest socks and be prepared to wallow/luxuriate in romance.I don’t know how he does it—This isn’t just a whiz-bang action story. Matt Buchman has written a thoughtful, warm romance that will put a smile on your face, right under your hot chocolate mustache.I received a free copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
