About this audiobook
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aurora Rose Reynolds comes a steamy romance about what happens when a risk-taker tries to follow the rules.
Jade has always been the reckless type. But after her relationship implodes and her business goes under, she realizes it might be time to change her ways. She decides on a fresh start in a new place: Montana.
But shortly after her arrival in Big Sky Country, she meets headstrong wilderness retreat owner Maverick, whose name, fittingly, means “dissenter.” Jade tries to convince herself he’s not the type of man she needs in her life. The problem is, she wants him in her life. She wants him more than anything.
For Maverick, his attraction to this out-of-towner is undeniable. But he’s sworn off relationships—until he gets to know the fiery-haired, fiery-tempered Jade. He can’t help but wonder if it’s worth opening himself up to her. It’s a gamble, sure. But is it reckless?
Or is love a high-stakes game of risk and reward that just might pay off in the end?

The revenge/ secrets tropes have the potential of going seriously wrong. Thankfully, Quick does an admirable job of keeping the angst to a minimum by writing two of the most straightforward characters in Romanclandia.
Phoebe is a delightful heroine who is incapable of keeping her opinions to herself for even one second and Gabriel's armor might be tarnished, but he is a knight nevertheless.
The first half of the storyline revolving around Gabriel's history with Phoebe and her family is wonderful and the chemistry between the leads is tangible. The plot does begin to lag during the second half with Phoebe and Gabriel's reactions to the unsurprising appearance of the villain. It is at this point that Phoebe's intelligence and Gabriel's charm vanish for a few chapters.
Thankfully, everything is ultimately sorted out, but this is an Amanda Quick novel after all, so no big surprise there either.
Looking forward to continuing with my read through of Quick's backlist. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5More space fillers, I guess. Sometimes my TBR pile makes no sense.

Who can resist this one. Gabriel Banner was a young man thinking to be a knight in shinning armour, just like the medieval tales he had in his library, when he helped Meredith Clayton try to escape an arranged marriage. The couple were caught, and Meredith's father ensured that gabriel was made to pay. he manages to vanish to the South Seas and is now back in England again, 8 years later, with a fortune and having come into a title.
Phoebe is Meredith's younger sister and she's the family misfit - the artistic, dreamy one in a family with a mathematical bent. She also has a headstrong streak and a fancy for the Arthurian legend. And now she's after a knight errant to try and discover what happened in the South Seas to a man she was friends with. Neil is presumed dead & she feels he went to his death trying to seek a fortune so he could marry her (not that she was interested in him that way). She can think of no-one better than Gabriel, who's not exactly keen on the role she's assigned to him. He's a bit older, wiser & more cynical than he was when he helped rescue Meredith and experienced the consequences.
You know there are going to be fireworks from the first chapter. And despite the trials & tribulations, you do know it's all going to work out in the end. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If I was forced to pick, I would probably say this one is my favourite Amanda Quick book. There is just something about this story that I really love. Phoebe and Gabriel both share a love of rare medieval books. Phoebe has an unwavering belief in Gabriel's nobility, while Gabriel starts out far more cynical and mercenary. Phoebe, in turn, is not used to having anyone to answer to for her reckless behavior. The settings of London and Gabriel's castle also appeal to me. And unlike many of Quick's books, Phoebe's family are alive and well, and are an important part of the story. Very enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5another favorite by Quick; perfect combination of romance and danger; both characters drive the book; great humor and family dynamics!
