- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sparks' Embraced series is simply a lot of fun. The characters are engaging and likeable, the plots are fast-paced, the writing is pretty great, and there's plenty of humor and action to go along with the romance. This book was no exception, and I'm glad I saved it for the proverbial rainy day since it was an easy and enjoyable read to sink into.I will say that I'm not so sure this book lived up to the earlier books in the series. Enjoyable as it was, and as great as the romance was, the characters felt a little bit less developed and interesting than those at the center of the last few books. The side characters also came off as stereotypes more so than in the earlier books, and made me more cognizant of the fact that so many of Sparks side characters in this series (women, especially) are painted as stereotypes that are exaggerated for the sake of humor more so than feeling real within the story. I'd have preferred if some of them were a bit more believable and less exaggerated/silly, even if that had lessened the humor in the book, but I should say that I haven't read enough of her other books to know if this is a trend that shows itself in her other series. That said, I still really enjoyed this work. I couldn't read these all the time, but as an occasional Princess-Bride like jaunt into easy, fantastical romance and adventure, this was a great book to have on hand. For readers who want a light-hearted paranormal romance that's heavy on both romance and humor, with plenty of adventure to spare, I'd recommend this series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Got an ARC for a Kerrelyn Sparks book. So excited!!! Thank you publishers & NetGalley.I truly loved this book. I wish that I had gotten to it sooner. Kerrelyn Sparks continues her Embraced series with the same humorous and hot magical fantasy theme here. I reviewed the prior book, So I Married a Sorcerer, and I am up to date on the current events in the series. I don't think it would be hard to pick this up if you haven't read any of the other books. It picks up and rolls with it. It isn't a high fantasy novel, so if fantasy isn't your thing, I would still pick this up if you are a historical person. It has a little of that feel to it. Don't get me wrong, there are dragons, and Gwennore is an elf.Gwennore is an elf and the countries her "sisters" rule overlook down on her. The Elves are seen as violent creatures. So when her two married sisters try to play matchmaker with the three single sisters, it leaves Gwennore feeling desperately lonely. All the men sneer at her and make fun of her appearance. She is constantly being talked about through the whole book. They're calling her names, constantly saying she is going to kill everyone. So Gwen is constantly doubting her self-worth. She has mastered all the languages, she is extremely loving to her adopted family, she even has a good sense of humor that you only see with Silas.Silas reminds me of my husband. No seriously!!! He really has that same rotten but funny humor. He makes you smile when you want to be mad. When you're serious he knows just the way to frustrate you but make you happy. Silas is much like a teenage boy too. He is from one of the three cursed clans. So women would adore them from afar, but never risk actually dating them. They fear the curse that makes them go mad or lose any children they would bear. I loved their relationship. I love the development of the story, the world, and where it is going. I am excited to see what the deal with the elves is. Damn... I don't want to say anything because I don't want to spoil anything. I will say you don't see much of the elves. You only hear them being mentioned. So it really has piqued my interest. I think Sorcha gets her book next, and I think we get to see the elves. The only thing that bothered me truly, was that I could not wrap my mind around how to pronounce Gwennore. So every time I would read her name, my mind would stutter. It would take me out of the rhythm of reading, and take me out of the book world for a minute.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kerrelyn has woven a rich tapestry with this series! And, the problem with finding a new series you love? When it isn't completed yet! It is SO hard waiting for the next book!! In fact, I love it so much I had to buy all 3 in audio format so I could "read" them again on my way to and from work. (I have a 50-minute drive one way.)I am absolutely in LOVE with the characters in this series. They are deeply detailed characters - with all the flaws and imperfections AND all the strengths, wisdom, and courage of people you might find as friends in real life. The girls are a family. And, with their guys, a quickly expanding family.Watching Gwennore grow in this story from a shy, retiring young woman into the brave, beautiful, and feisty woman she can be while finding the perfect man for her is so entertaining and poignant at the same time. It is a thoroughly engaging read! **I received a complimentary copy of this ebook via NetGalley.**
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was just a whole lot of fun! I have been a huge fan of this series since I read an early copy of the first book so I was really looking forward to this newest installment. The fact that I knew that there would be dragons in the book made it all just a little bit better. I went into this book with some pretty high expectations and I am happy to report that they were all met. I read most of this book in a single sitting because I didn't want to put the book down. This is the third book in the Embraced series and while this book could be read as a stand alone, I do think that this is a series that works best read in order whenever possible. I have grown to love the characters that appear in this series and had a nice time seeing how some of them are doing. This book focuses on Gwennore and it was really nice to get to know her better in this story. I really like Brody's character and was happy to find that he played a large role in this story as well. Gwennore is an elf and like her adopted sisters she has a special power due to her birth date. She has the ability to determine the cause of an illness through touch which makes healing possible. She has a close relationship with her sister's daughter and doesn't hesitate to put her life on the line to protect the child when she is kidnapped by a dragon. Gwennore soon learns that she can speak to dragons and forms a bond with her rescuer, Puff.Silas is highly respected and carries himself with authority. He is also very easy on the eyes and is the kind of man that can make things happen. He has decided to watch over Gwennore while she is at the castle and takes on the role of protector. With her skills as healer, she can help the people of his country along with the queen. I loved Silas and Gwennore together. I really thought that all of their feelings towards each other felt completely authentic. Silas is able to see things in Gwennore that others have missed. She is used to be treated poorly because she is an elf so she is surprised to find that Silas is genuinely interested. They had a lot of chemistry together and I loved the spark that seemed to fill the page when they shared a scene. I would recommend this series to others. This was a book that brought a big smile to my face as I turned the pages. I loved that there was just a bit of humor mixed into the story at just the right times. I cannot wait to read more books in this fun series. I received an advance reader edition of this book from St. Martin's Press.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon by Kerrelyn SparksThe Embraced #3As I began to read the introduction and backstory to this book I began to smile remembering the two books that preceded this one. Yes, I smiled :) Why? Because books like these remind me of the fairy tales I read as a child BUT these are all grown up. There are princesses and dragons, trolls and elves, magic and mysteries, romance and oh so much more…they are fun tales filled with adventure and action and friendship and quests with evil thwarted and a hook for the next book in the series. When I finished I thought, “Hooray! There are at least two more books to read before this series ends!”So, what is the story about? It is about five young women who are “embraced” due to what was happening in the sky when they were born. Each one has a talent that some consider a curse. They were all sent away and raised together away from the general population and became closer than blood sisters. Two of the sisters have had their stories told and two remain but in book three, this one, Gwennore meets her mate. Gwennie is an elf and her love is a dragon shifter…and what a story theirs is! Who wouldn’t want to meet and be saved by a dragon? Who wouldn’t want to feel needed and loved and cherished? Who wouldn’t want to be able to do something good for a people that were in need of her skills? And, who wouldn’t want to find their own true love? Silas and Gwennore are a match made in the heavens and their story made me smile when I read the last page, too :)Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4.5 Stars
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Eight Simple Rules For Dating a Dragon by Kerrlyn Sparks3rd in the paranormal romance series. A novel f the Embraced. Full of humor, high moral values and an abundance of conflicts, this book was the ultimate entertainment. I loved being back with this world and the so-called orphans that grew up with nuns. Two of the five are now queens of their lands. This heroine, Gwen, is almost painfully naive. It’s endearing. In her eyes, Silas is a rascal. And she would almost prefer to date Puff, the dragon, than be with Silas, who makes her stomach tumble. As they fight to save the land from a curse, Gwen and Silas find their attraction turn into love.I really enjoyed this 3rd in the series. It definitely foretells what’s to happen in the next story. Or at least we think it does...
