Back in the 2nd century, England was occupied by the Romans – but in the 500 years that the invading forces remained here, gradually integrating with the local Celtic tribes until the Roman Empire finally withrew its troops in 410 AD, they never succeeded in conquering Scotland. Indeed, they were so terrified of the fierce Scots and Picts that Emperor Hadrian  ordered the building of a huge wall to keep them out of England! Completed in 122 AD, Hadrian’s Wall stretched from Segendunum at Wallsend in Northumberland to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria, covering a whopping 73 miles.
