About this audiobook

Seven years ago, an innocent act by Rowan Slone turned her life into a nightmare. Since the age of ten she’s lived with the burden of her baby brother’s death. Now she is seventeen and all she wants to do is graduate high school, go to college, and escape the loveless family she has endured all these years—the same family that holds her responsible for his death. But no one holds her responsible more than herself.
When long-time crush Mike Anderson invites her to the Prom, suddenly her future looks brighter. Rowan’s younger sister, Trina, however, is determined to ruin her new-found happiness, no matter the cost. And when Rowan discovers her mother’s long-held secret, she finds herself teetering on the edge of an abyss.
Can Rowan find the strength to move toward the future or is she doomed to dwell in the past?

I just finished this book. I found it interesting and engaging. There are some issues- the first being that there isn't really a trigger warning on this one. There is a lack of depth. Intriguing characters are left a little two dimension. The ending is almost warp speed- big reveal, big drama, meet the maybe boyfriend's family, find peace..etc. A lot of strings were left hanging.Based on it is book 1 of a series, I suspect that this was the "gateway" story and perhaps later ones will add the depth needed to make it a great story.

I thought this was an excellent book, though a little short. I found Rowan to be a believable and sympathetic character, along with the dynamics of her family. I would say if you like VC Andrews-type tragedy this is right on par (minus the sex). I really enjoyed it.

I liked this book in an okayish way. It didn’t keep me enthralled and it was hard to keep me interested, I had to take a lot of breaks because I found my mind wandering a lot, but when I could focus I did like what I was reading.

Great book with a few surprises, I would recommend it for any young girls and maybe talk with them about some of the hard subjects

As a former high school English teacher, I found this book appropriately engaging and would be happy to recommend to teens. Although at times the trauma and heartache were somewhat hard to believe, I also would concur that it could certainly be plausible. The romance was a bit cheesy as an adult reader, but would certainly be one that would compel the young adult reader to keep reading. I appreciated the lack of sexually descriptive scenes and the clean language. I do think that the boyfriend’s family and closing of the book felt too idyllic and almost as though the writer was just trying to finish it. A bit more of a realistic ending with the main character developing more internally would have been a more satisfying ending. Overall a good read and could recommend to young adults. Thank you to Library Thing for the digital copy!

Seven years ago, Rowan Slone covered her baby brother Aidan's lower body with a blanket. When he didn't wake up the next morning, her parents accused Rowan of murder. You can imagine how this marked the youth of Rowan. In her teenage years, she developed anorexia and self-mutilation as coping mechanisms. Her dysfunctional family fell further apart, now her little sister, Trina is pregnant with two possible fathers, one of which hook up with Rowan as well.Turbulent times in which all characters make radical choices with far-reaching consequences. Long-held secrets come to the surface, with sudden inside information from grandma. Will it be in time and restore the relationship between Mike Anderson invites and Rowan?
