Editor's Note
Coming to terms…
This is a coming-of-age story about Josie, a teenager living with her family of Baptist missionaries in Cali, Colombia. Josie’s parents fight against her desire to explore a lifestyle outside their religion, but Josie soon learns they have secrets of their own. “The Existence of Pity” explores hypocrisy, colonialism, and coming to terms with the mistakes of our parents.
Jeannie Zokan
Jeannie Zokan, author of The Existence of Pity and Courage Without Grace, grew up in Colombia, South America. After studying Library Science at Baylor University, she moved to Washington, DC to attend The George Washington University. Much like Josie in Courage Without Grace, she became a palm reader there. When DC’s cold weather finally did her in, she took her motorcycle to Florida's Gulf Coast where she now lives ten minutes from the beach with her husband and their cat. When she’s not writing or editing, she’s reading, playing tennis, visiting their two grown daughters, or practicing yoga in their garage gym.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was overly descriptive in an unnecessary way. I felt like the plot just up and ended abruptly; I felt confused when ten minutes were left because I wasn’t sure how it was going to end. The logic of parents trusting the boy and not the girl made sense - very common in evangelical culture. Hearing at the end that the author’s parents are not like the ones in this book was annoying because I thought I was listening to a memoir and it turned out to be fiction I guess.
