About this audiobook

With a lucrative freelance career and a loving family, Deborah Earle has a life many women would envy. But her daughter, Amanda, is heading to college soon, and Deborah worries about having an empty nest. She thinks another child might be the answer. Her husband, Richard, however, may not be willing to start over so late in life.
Amanda is excited about attending NYU next year, but she meets Graham, a handsome older boy, falls hard, and considers postponing her education to stay close to him. Her mother takes an instant dislike to Graham, but Amanda refuses to let her keep them apart.
As Deborah watches her daughter rush headlong toward heartache on an all-too-familiar path, the secrets lurking in Deborah’s past continue to echo in her present. When tragedy strikes, Deborah faces a future she could never have imagined.

Editor's Note

Empty nests…

On the brink of becoming an empty-nester, Deborah Earle has to confront the void in her future and her hidden past. When her daughter believes a man might be more worthwhile than college, things go even more awry. This moving family saga has a surprise ending and reminds readers not to take time with those you love for granted.

I found the preachy tone about abortion/teenage sexuality unnecessary and irritating. I kept listening initially because of some of the positive reviews and possibly suspenseful ending. Gave up on chapter 10

This story is incredibly sad. It just keeps coming for this poor woman and her family. Somehow I feel detached and I was still stressed about it, which speaks to the author's skills.
The story, however, felt like Webb wanted to cover every possible topic inside the two covers of this book, and because of it, leaving them very superficial instead of going a little bit deeper into the possibilities such as relationships between sister, mother-daughter, couple after great loss.
Overall, it is a good one, heart wrenching but also superficial. Weird combination.

The tears this story brings are heartfelt and real. The troubled past Deborah, the wish of a teenaged girl, the horror of iatrogenic illness, the hope of life through grief were vividly portrayed. Bravo an author who meticulously crafted a magnificent novel.
